The Battle Mountain High School girls basketball team started off hot at the Serpent Classic in Hawthorne last weekend, with four wins in five games.
Battle Mountain beats Bishop
Battle Mountain opened with a 45-38 win over Bishop, Calif., on Thursday, Nov. 29.
Grace Melver paced the Lady Longhorns with 13 points, while fellow senior Sruti Bhakta joined her in double figures with 10 points to go with six assists.
Brooke Ripley contributed seven points and Sheardyn Slaybaugh had six points and eight rebounds.

Melver had a team-high 13 points and Bhakta added 12 points, five assists and five steals.
BMHS slips past
Smith Valley
On Friday, Nov. 30, Battle Mountain opened the day with a 39-32 victory over Smith Valley.
The Lady Longhorns were led by Melver with 12 points. The senior added seven rebounds and four assists. Sophomore Addi Slaybaugh had six points.
Lady Longhorns cruise past Lakers
In the second game on Friday, Nov. 30, Battle Mountain cruised past Pyramid Lake 22-19.
Five Lady Longhorns had nine point or more, with Addi Slaybaugh leading the way with 10. Kira Smith, Ripley, Bhakta and Melver each had nine points.
BMHS gets past
Mineral County
Battle Mountain closed out the tournament with a 47-26 win over host Mineral County.
Ripley paced the Lady Longhorns with 11 points, while Melver added 10 points, eight rebounds and six assists. Bhakta had six points, seven assists and five steals.
“The Lady Longhorns had a good weekend,” said BMHS coach Paul Tremayne. “We did not shoot very well. We saw a couple of different defenses we were not prepared for. The kids played hard and worked there way thru it. It was good to get going. We are very excited to get back to practice and get ready for the Virginia City Tournament.”
Battle Mountain heads to Virginia City this weekend and is scheduled to play Coleville on Thursday at 3 p.m.
The Lady Longhorns meet up with Sierra Lutheran on Friday at 3:20 p.m. and McDermitt on Saturday at 9 a.m.
