The Lowry High School boys basketball team turned its slow start into two big wins over the competition last weekend at the Railroad Classic at Sparks High School .
The Heritage Eagles from Littleton, Colo., took down the Buckaroos 58-39 on Thursday in their first game at the tournament. "We played OK, but we just could not score,” said Lowry coach Chad Peters.
Dorsey Naveran was the high scorer for the Bucks against Littleton with seven. Kobe Stoker chipped in six points, while Preston Snow and Michael Casalez both had five each. Brendan Domire and Scottie Smith added four apiece.
“We were 11-of-44 shooting from the field, and only 4-of-15 from three," Peters said. "15-of-59 shooting the ball is horrible; you are not going to beat anyone like that. On a positive note, we did make four of our six free throw attempts in that game.”
The Bucks played Sparks High School on the Railroaders’ home court Friday and crushed them 61-25.
“We held Sparks to seven points in the first quarter, and zero in the second," added the coach. "In the third quarter we out-scored them 21-6. We were able to get some of our younger guys in the game to play significant minutes, and they were actually able to increase our lead.”
Stoker was the high scorer against Sparks with 11, Oscar Juanes and Casalez had nine each. Every Buckaroo scored in this game.
On Saturday, Lowry brought it strong again, as they took out the 4A Division’s Damonte Ranch 53-33.
Every Lowry player got on the scoreboard again in this game. Stoker had twelve points, Naveran ten, and Domire added eight.
“I was really pleased about how we played against Damonte Ranch,” Peters said. “We played them in the consolation championship game, and Kobe (Stoker) dominated that game from the get-go. He played his best game in the three years he has been with me. Preston (Snow) came off the bench and did an amazing job. He played hard and hit some shots, got some boards. We are ten to twelve guys deep now, we can put guys in and not miss a beat.”
The boys get a two-week break before they take on North Valleys at home on Friday, Dec. 14, at 7:30 p.m. Truckee visits Sat. Dec. 15, for a 2:30 p.m. match.
"I was very happy with our guys," Peters said. "They listened well and made the adjustments that we asked for. I am very pleased with the direction that we are heading, although we still have a long way to go in this season.”
