The Lowry High School boys soccer team traveled to Elko on Tuesday to take on the 0-3 Indians in their first league contest.
The Buckaroos scored their first win over the Indians since 2012 by defeating them 4-3.
“This is the first time we have beaten those guys in a long time, and in their house," said LHS coach Steve Swanson after the match
Lowry is now 1-0 in league play, Elko is 0-1.
Bucks play in
South Tahoe tournament
The Buckaroos dropped their first contest of the season last Friday on the road against tournament host South Lake Tahoe 5-3.
Senior Alejandro Martinez scored two of the three goals for Lowry but the Buckaroo defense could not hold off the Viking attack.
“Our scoring was good in Tahoe, but our defense was not so hot,” Swanson said. “We need to work on that a little bit. We were leading in the Tahoe game two different times, but the defense kind of let me down. The teams we lost to in this tournament are really good teams, but we gave up some goals that we shouldn’t have given up.”
In the second game played on Friday, Lowry brought home their first win of the season defeating West Wendover 6-2. Martinez scored an additional three goals in this game.
Saturday’s action found the Bucks facing two formidable opponents, as they lost to Faith Lutheran 4-1 and Damonte Ranch 7-1.
“Faith Lutheran is a 3A powerhouse, so losing to them was not unexpected, and Damonte Ranch is a 4A school," said LHS senior goalie Chris Schultz. “I like playing goalie because I am the one guy that sees the entire field and gets to control everybody else.”
Lowry varsity will play their first home game Friday, Sept. 7. at 5 p.m. against the Sparks Railroaders.
The Buckaroos are back home on Saturday, Sept. 8, to face North Valleys at noon. The Panthers played in the 4A state championship last year and dropped to the 3A this season as part of NIAA realignment.
