A trip to the Fernley Tournament on Saturday, Sept. 8, begins the year for the Winnemucca Junior High School seventh and eighth-grade girls basketball teams.
Eighth-grade coach Daralee Millikan is looking forward to a good season in her fifth year as the coach of the girls basketball team.
“I’m excited for the season, the girls are really working hard so far,” she said. “They have a great attitude, so I think there will be some good things happening for them. We also have a couple of new teams that we will be playing this year (Pyramid Lake and Clayton), that will be a new experience for us.”
On Wednesday ,Sept. 12, the girls travel to Nixon to take on Pyramid Lake and Friday, Sept. 14, they will go to Carson and meet Eagle Valley.
A shorter trip to McDermitt occurs on Saturday, Sept. 15, with a 9 a.m. tip off.
“I love the energy of basketball, playing with my friends and having fun," said WJHS eighth-grader Kailey Franklin. "I think we are going to do real good this year because we have all been playing together for a couple of years now and we like to work together.”
The first of only two home appearances will see a Bi-County Tournament held in Winnemucca on Saturday, Sept. 24.
On Monday, Sept. 24, the Warriors travel to Reno and challenge Clayton Middle School.
On Saturday, Sept. 29, they will be in Lovelock for the second Bi-County Tournament. WJHS returns home for the final Bi-County Tournament on Saturday, Oct. 6.
The eighth-grade roster includes Natalie Albertson, Megan Cook, Mia Hernandez, Ryleigh Raabe, Liliana Chavez, Shelbie Hoyt, Belen Barocio, Alexandra Barocio, Kailey Franklin, Gracie Marchand, Cali Keith, Layloni Pickett and Taryn Lords.
The seventh-grade girls team is coached by Clay Sagers and includes Piper Nichols, Autum Sanchez, Southern Gotchy, Katlyn Gomez, Hayden Case, Miranda Draper, Cambria Tisue, Sloan Fox,Bryce Brinkerhoff, Zaira Villagomez, Jacqueline Sanchez, Alexis Galarza, Savannah Stoker and manger Betzy Esquivel.
