Tryouts for the Lowry High School boys and girls soccer teams started last Saturday at Jerry Tobin Field.
The girls got an early start in their attempts to make the squad starting at 7 a.m. The boys came in an hour later at 8 a.m. and started showing the coach what they could do.
“We have 30 kids here trying out for JV and Varsity combined," said LHS girls coach Ed Partee, "We don’t have a lot of returners this year, but we have quite a few freshmen coming in. I will know who made the cut by Wednesday."
Lowry senior Victoria Tirado will be entering her fourth year on the varsity squad.
“I like the excitement on the field with my teammates when something good happens and all the hard work that we put in,” she said. “We may have some struggles in the beginning of the season this year, but I think if we work together as a team we will end up getting where we need to be eventually. Hopefully everyone can come out and support the Lady Bucks this season.”
LHS victory packs are available for purchase by boosters and students to get their Lowry groove on.
The cost is $60 for a T-shirt, sweat shirt and sweatpants. Individual clothing items be purchased separately and can also be customized with names and numbers of players as requested for an additional fee. Please contact LHS at 623-8130 for more details.
“We have 45 boys trying out, and we only have uniforms for 40," said LHS boys coach Steve Swanson. "We usually don’t have this big of a turnout. Team decisions will be made by the end of the week. My expectations for this year are high; we have a lot of good young players. I have freshman that are going to be starting on the varsity team. We play in an extremely tough league and we have a very difficult schedule, but I have high hopes that we can at least get to the playoffs this year.”
LHS girls and boys soccer teams will play their first games on Aug.24-25 in South Lake Tahoe, where they will each compete in a tournament.
Luis Solis is a returning sophomore LHS soccer player and added he loves to defend,
"I like clearing out balls with my head, and I like stopping attackers from reaching the goal,” he said. “We should have a decent season. We have a lot of good freshmen here.”
The boys home opener will be Friday Sept. 7 against Sparks and the home opener will be Tuesday, Aug. 28, for the girls against Elko. All Lowry sports schedules are available at nnvd1a.org.
