The eighth annual overnight soccer tournament happened last Saturday night at the Lowry High School football field.

Play began at 7 p.m. and ran through the night. Ten teams with four players and one substitute participated in three or four 20-minute pool play games, then the top three went on to a single elimination round.

“The last three years a team called Milan has won, and they have won five of the last eight tournaments," said Lowry varsity boys soccer coach Steve Swanson. “This is a 4-on-4 four tournament that we do as a fundraiser. It raises money for the high school soccer team; it’s our primary fundraiser of the year.” “I’ve been here for 18 years and some of these guys out here have been here longer than I have.".

Luis Ruiz was in attendance at the overnight tournament.

“My cousin is playing in this tournament so we came to watch and support him," Ruiz said. "It’s been pretty hot lately, so the idea of an overnight tournament is good. It’s kind of like an indoor soccer game, but outdoors."

One of the players in the tournament, Pedro Lopez, had this to say about soccer.

“I’ve been playing soccer for 14 years. Soccer is a world-wide culture, it is just amazing." Lopez said “I’ve been playing in this tournament for four years, people should come out here and play, it’s fun."
