Football season is finally here

The Lowry High School football team began its journey through the Northern 3A football season on Wednesday night.

“It looks like we are sitting right at 75 players,” said head coach Taua Cabatbat.

The boys picked up their gear for the season, then they hit the field for a couple of hours worth of drills. 10 practices are required by the state before they can play their first game.

Senior Caleb Sanchez was at the practice and commented, “It’s going to be a good season, it’s just a matter of people having the right attitude and putting in the work. I like the intensity of football, the feeling you get when you are out there with the ball.”

The first game of the season is Friday, Aug. 17, at LHS against Pahrump Valley.

“This is going to be my 15th year as a football coach and my fourth year as the head coach," Cabatbat said. "We’ve got a pretty solid group of returning players, a mix of seniors and juniors that look pretty good. We’re pretty good at the skill positions, I think they might impress some people.”

The first league home game is Aug. 24 against Sparks.

LHS Freshman Brian McGee was excited to be playing football.

“I’ve played football for one year, and I didn’t really get that much playing time,” he said. “Now I’m here to make a change. I like football because I get to work my heart out and show my coaches I’m pretty good."

All LHS sports schedules can be found at nnvd1a.org.

“To be honest with you, we’re trying to make a playoff run this year,” Cabatbat said. “I tell these kids it’s our time coming and if you continue to work hard we can get back to the playoffs and see how it goes from there.”
