Twenty junior golfers hit the links on Wednesday at the Winnemucca Municipal Golf Course as they participated in the Doug Maddox Memorial Tournament.
Dillon Patterson took the boys 15-17 title with a 72.
“I’ve golfed since I was three and now I’m on the high school team,” Patterson said. “I like golf because it’s more of a mental sport than a physical sport.”
In the boys 10 and under Txema Bengochea and Byron Jimenez tied at 40, with Jimenez winning a “chip-off” to take the title.
Katelyn Cassinelli took the girls 10 and under title with a 47.
“One time I hit my third stroke into the sand and then it took me all other seven shots (10 is the maximum number of shots allowed per hole) and I still didn’t get out of the sand,” Katelyn Cassinelli recalled.
Landon Esquivel won the boys 11-14 category by shooting 50, and Marquette Cassinelli carded a 53 in the girls 11-14 division.
Luis Mendoza commented, “This is my third year golfing and I’ve played in every tournament this year. My best score ever was a 43 in the tournament last week.”
