Cory Sample is currently leading the nation in points in the International Motor Contest Association (IMCA) Modifieds.
He has 1,138 points and is holding onto a five-point lead over the driver in second place.
The point structure for IMCA awards 40 points to the winner of each race, 39 points for second place, 38 for third place, etc. The points season runs from Jan 1- Sept. 30.
“I’ve been racing for 12 years, I started here in Winnemucca,” Sample said. “I’ve raced all over the country and in Canada also, I travel around quite a bit. We’ve raced in Paris, Calif., Winnemucca, Delta, Utah and Rock Springs, Wyo., this year already."
The IMCA Modifieds burst onto the racing scene in 1979 and have become the calling card of IMCA. They are widely credited as the saviors of modern racing and IMCA has received numerous awards for their visionary efforts.
“The last two seasons we have done alright, but with only about 60 days left in the season, to be in the top spot right now is a good feeling,” Sample confessed. “They (IMCA) take your best 30 races out of 55 races, that is all you are allowed to run each season. Technically, the best you could have is 1,200 points (30 races won at 40 points each), so at 1,138 we are only 62 points away from having a perfect season. We put in a ton of effort, to be at the top you gotta keep working on things.”
IMCA holds sanctioned events in 36 states and one Canadian province.
They award $650,000 in point fund monies to their drivers annually according to their website imca.com. They have a “philosophy and focus on family, teamwork and a strong sense of integrity.”
“Last Friday night we ran in Winnemucca and won there,” Sample noted.
“Then we drove 600 miles to Paris, CA to race there on Saturday night. On Sunday we drove 560 miles to Susanville, CA to race there on Sunday night.”
Sample concluded, “We will be racing this weekend at Lovelock Speedway, they are having a double-header there. Next weekend we are going back to Rock Springs, WY for another double-header there.”
