The last time the Lowry High School boys golf team found itself in a competitive round was way back in mid-March.
The Buckaroos were set to host their tournament in March but bad weather postponed the tournament. With the addition of spring break throughout northern Nevada, the Northern 3A was off for a month.
That was until last Wednesday when the league began its final push of the season at Ruby View Golf Course in Elko.
Spring Creek, the defending 3A state champion, showed its dominance once again winning the tournament, with a season-best score of 314.
Truckee was second at 333 and Lowry was third at 353. Elko (356) and South Tahoe (362) rounded out the top five. Fernley (367) Churchill County (372) and Dayton (513) closed out the scores.
Truckee’s Ethan Flynn was the low medalist at even-par 71, while defending state champion, Daniel Mahlke from Spring Creek, was second at 74. Spring Creek’s Trey Sharp was third at 76.
Payton Capellen led the Buckaroos with a round of 84, while teammate Zane Fifield also broke 90 to shoot 87. Sophomore Kobe Stoker followed with an 80 and Max Mavity, playing in his first tournament of the season, shot 92. Dillon Patterson carded a 93 and Rian DeLong shot 107.
Buckaroos finish second in Spring Creek
The Northern 3A stayed in Elko County and played at Spring Creek Golf Course last Thursday.
Spring Creek won on its home course with a 327 and Lowry improved to second place with a team score of 349.
South Tahoe (356), Elko (362) and Churchill County (367) rounded out the top five. A day after finishing second in Elko, Truckee was sixth at 371.
Mahkle shined on his home course and was the low medalist at 4-under par 67. Churchill County’s Kelvin Cann and Mason Adams were second and third, respectively. Each player shot 81 but Cann won second place in a playoff.
Fifield and Patterson paced Lowry with rounds of 85. Patterson improved by nine strokes from his round at Ruby View Golf Course. Stoker was the third golfer in the 80s at 87 and Capellen had the final kept score at 92. DeLong and Mavity finished with scores of 103 and 104, respectively.
"The guys did pretty well for having a month off between tournaments," said LHS coach Andrew Meyer. "It's a battle between three teams for state for sure."
With four tournaments left in the regular season, Lowry has one of three state tournament berths in its sights.
Spring Creek leads the Northern 3A standings with 32 points. Lowry is second with 25 points and South Tahoe (23) is third. Truckee is fourth with 21 points.
The Northern 3A does not have a postseason regional tournament. The three state tournament berths are based on the final team standings. The state tournament will be played in Pahrump on May 14-15.
The Northern 3A was in Fallon on Tuesday and results were not available at press time.
Lowry hosts the Northern 3A on Wednesday at Winnemucca Municipal Golf Course, starting at 10 a.m.
