Longhorns shine at Eureka Invitational

As the postseason nears, the Battle Mountain High School track and field team had a strong showing at the Eureka Invitational this past Friday in Eureka.

The Longhorn throwers on the boys side had five of the top six finishers in the shot put. Eddie Morfin continued to lead the way with a throw of 46 feet, 0.25 inches, which was a personal best. Jesse Edgar (40-1) and Payton Ayers (39-0.50) were second and third, respectively, with personal bests as well. Tristin Cordingley (34-6.75) was fifth and Richard Davis (33-8) placed sixth.

Morfin swept the throwing events, claiming the discus title with a toss of 112-8.50 He won the disus title by nearly 15 feet over West Wendover's Gunnar Carter.

Cordingley was third with a throw of 106-11 for another personal best and Joey Huhta (89-8) was eighth.

Daegan McClary led the way in the 400 meters with a time of 58.89 seconds for a personal best and teammate Izaak Stahl was second.

Cody Ostler posted a pair of runner-up finishes in the long jump at 17-8 and triple jump (39-5.50).

Ostler lost the triple jump by three inches to Lincoln County's Benson Wadsworth.

Teammates DeAndre Powell (17-8) and Isaiah Powell (17-4) were second and third in the long jump and Michael Malone was fifth in the triple jump with a leap of 31-1. In addition, Malone was third in the 800 meters at 2:30.4 and fourth in the 1,600 meters with a time of 4:38.7.

Austin Wilkins finished third in the 200 meters in a time of 24.75 and Wilkins (12.1) led a 2-3-4 finish in the 100-meter dash, as Payton Ayers was fourth at 12.19 and Isaiah Powell (12.31) was fifth.

Michael Ingram was fourth in the 300-meter hurdles at 54.18 and Ryan Manning was ninth in the 800 meters with a time of 2:38.3. Declan McClary placed sixth in the 1,600 meters at 13:43.2 and 16th in the 1,600 meters at 6:13.

The 4x100 and 4x200 relays took home first place and the 4x800 relay was fourth.

Battle Mountain ran away with the team title with 218 points. Elko was a distant second at 104. Lincoln County (74), Jackpot (61) and Spring Creek (55) rounded out the top five.

White Pine (45), West Wendover (33), Gabbs (29), Wells (23) and Independence (17) completed the top 10.

On the girls side, Mary Wolters finished second in the shot put with a toss of 27-0.50, which was a personal best. The senior was seventh in the discus at 73-2 and sixth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 14.63.

Esma Chemo placed fourth in the shot put with a throw of 26-7 and eighth in the discus at 71-11. Anahi Lopez (22-0.25) and Jasmine Lopez (21-11) earned top-10 finishes in the shot put.

Freshman Kailee Wolters finished 12th in the 200 meters with a time of 32.14 and 21st in the 100 meters at 15.96.

Kynndra Penson had mark of 11-3 in the long jump to place 10th and the sophomore was 24th in the 100-meter dash with a time of 16.6.

Hania Amezcua finished 13th in the discus with a toss of 57-3, whiuch was a personal best. The senior was 14th in the shot put at 20-8.50, also a personal best for her.

Valentina Garcia was 19th in the shot put with a throw of 18-1, a personal best for her.

The 4x100 relay placed fifth.

The Lady Longhorns were seventh as a team with 24 points.

The team race in the girls division was much closer with Elko narrowly beating Wells 129-126.

Eurerka (104), White Pine (87) and Spring Creek (80) were third, fourth and fifth, respectively Jackot was sixth with 33 points..

Battle Mountain travels to Ely on Friday for the White Pine Invitational.
