The postseason chances for the Battle Mountain High School softball team will come down to the final two weeks of the season.
The Lady Longhorns took on league-leading Pershing County and dropped all three games to the undefeated Mustangs. Pershing County won the series opener on Tuesday, April 17, in Lovelock and swept a doubleheader in Battle Mountain on Saturday by identical scores of 19-1.
PCHS wins opener
Pershing County raced out to a 7-0 lead in the first game of the series in Lovelock but needed to hold on late to secure the win. The Lady Longhorns scored two runs each in the fourth and fifth innings to cut the deficit to 9-4.
Battle Mountain added a single run in the sixth and three more in the seventh to give Pershing County a scare.
Marissa Rogers was 3-for-4 at the plate with six RBI and two runs scored. One of the three hits was a home run. Lynzee Develyn and Jenna Leavitt each had two hits and Alma Chavira, Reagan Buller and Julia Ramirez had one hit apiece.
Kira Smith suffered the loss for Battle Mountain, allowing 10 runs (three earned) on nine hits. She struck out two and walked two.
Mustangs knock
off Longhorns
The series moved to Battle Mountain on Saturday and the opener was tied 1-1 after an inning of play. However, it was all Mustangs after that, as they scored seven times in the second inning to go in front 8-1. Pershing County tacked on six runs in the third and five more in the fourth to end the contest on the 15-run rule.
Chavira, Buller and Leavitt all had one hit. Leavitt’s hit drove in the lone run for Battle Mountain.
Jackie LaRiva and Sarah Berumen split time in the circle for the Lady Longhorns. Leavitt started and suffered the loss.
PCHS finishes sweep
The finale of the series lasted just four innings as well, with Pershing County scoring six runs in the second and third innings to go in front 15-1.
Battle Mountain scored its lone run of the game in the bottom of the first inning on a RBI-single by Leavitt. Rogers and Develyn had the other hits for the Lady Longhorns.
Smith and Berumen each threw two innings, with Smith suffering the loss.
Battle Mountain is scheduled to play North Tahoe this weekend, beginning on Friday and playing a doubleheader on Saturday.
The Lady Longhorns sit in sixth place in the Northern 2A at 6-9 and are on the outside looking in for the playoffs.
Pershing County leads the Northern 2A at 15-1 and White Pine is second at 13-1. Yerington is third at 9-4 and Silver Stage and Incline are tied for fourth at 6-7. Battle Mountain closes the regular season with three games at Incline.
