When the Battle Mountain High School boys golf coach looked outside on Thursday morning and saw rain he figured it was going to be another brutal day of bad conditions as the Longhorns were set to play their annual tournament at Mountain View Golf Course.
Those fears were erased as the rain held off long enough for the 45 or so golfers to get their round in. The skies opened up as the last players finished playing their 18 holes.
Elko’s JV fought through the cold conditions to win the team title with a score of 361. Battle Mountain (371) shot its best score of the year and finished second. Jackpot (393), White Pine (402) and Tonopah (417) rounded out the top five. West Wendover placed sixth with a team total of 431 and Spring Creek JV (476) and Wells (479) were seventh and eighth, respectively.
White Pine’s Colin Young was the low medalist on the day with an even-par round of 72. He was the only golfer to shoot in the 70s. Battle Mountain’s Brody Young carded an 81 to finish second. That is his personal best by nine strokes.
Elko’s Christian Cooper (85), Spring Creek’s Kevin Thompson (88) and Elko’s Sayer Beatty (91) rounded out the top five.
The Longhorns’ Jimmy Harris carded a 92 to finish sixth overall and Battle Mountain’s Jimmy Harris shot 94 and tied for eighth with Elko’s Kani Haggerty.
Avry Tucker had the last kept score for Battle Mountain with a 104 and Jake Smith (109) and Bradley Rogers (142) completed the scores for the Longhorns.
Battle Mountain returns to action on Thursday in Wells at Chimney Creek Golf Course.
The Longhorns will be in Stateline on Friday May 4, to play Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course in a tournament hosted by Whittell High School. That will give the Longhorns a look at the competition from the western side of the state in the 2A.
The Northern 2A Regional Championships will take place on Tuesday, May 8, at Toiyabe Golf Club in Washoe Valley.
The top three teams advance to the 2A state championships at Boulder Municipal Golf Course in Boulder City on May 16-17. The top five individuals not on qualifying teams also advance to the state tournament.
White Pine and West Wendover will not be a part of the Northern Regional Championship and play in the Southern 2A for the regional tournament. That opens up a couple spots for the Longhorns to claim one of the three spots.
"It was a good day for Battle Mountain golf, except for the cool weather," said Wallock. "We had a season-best team score and five individual bests. Brody has been working very had putting in extra time on his own and it paid off yesterday with a great score. Hopefully this success will help motivate this team to keep improving ."
