Lowry track and field team performs well at Fernley Invitational as season nears finish

The Lowry High School track and field team made its first stop of last weekend at the Fernley Invitational on Friday, April 13.

Rachel Garrison set a personal best in the discus at 124 feet, 9 inches to win the event by 21 feet.

Teammate Heather Hall was second at 103-6, which was a personal best for her. Garrison was fourth in the shot put at 30-2 and Hall was seventh with a toss of 28 feet, another personal best for her.

Sophomore Julianna Garcia was the runner-up in the 200 meters with a time of 28.29 seconds. Elko’s Phoebe Fagoaga won the race at 27.97.

Michelle Rookstool turned in a third-place performance in the pole vault, as the junior cleared the bar at 5-6 for a personal best.

Lily Pasquale turned in a pair of sixth-place finishes in the 300-meter hurdles and long jump.

Pasquale set a personal-best time of 54.06 in the hurdles and another best in the long jump with a leap of 14-1. The junior was 10th in the triple jump at 27-2, which was a third personal-best for her.

Freshman Kinsey Albisu was sixth in the 1,600 meters with a time of 6:37.02 and seventh in the 800 meters at 3:00.41. Senior Lucero Ruiz placed 12th in the 100-meter dash with a time of 14.76 and was 12th in the long jump with a mark of 13-1.

The 4x100 relay of Shelby Garrison, Gonzalez, Hailey Fernandez and Adia Bengochea were first in a time of 52.96. Yerington was second at 54.45.

Shelby Garrison, Fernandez, Hailey Hinkle and Bengochea were first in the 4x400 at 4:16.40. The foursome beat out Fernley by nearly three seconds.

The 4x200 relay of Shelby Garrison, Fernandez, Gonzalez and Bengochea were second at 1:51.89. Dayton took home the title with a time of 1:49.24.

The Lowry girls were fourth in the team standings with 77 points.

Elko ran away with the team title with 193 points and Fernley was a distant second at 120. Dayton was third with 82 points and Yerington (58) was fifth.

On the boys side, senior Erick Lopez paced the Buckaroos with a third-place finish in the 200 meters with a time of 23.60. He was fourth in the 100-meter dash at 11.51.

Sophomore Jace Mentaberry cleared the bar in the pole vault at 9-6 for a personal best and he was sixth in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 44.51.

Colton DeLaMora was eighth in the triple jump with a career-best leap of 34-1 and Dalton Irons was ninth in the long jump with a leap of 16-11.

Chris Esparza set a personal best in the 3,200 meters at 11:38 to place ninth and freshman Sam Roth was ninth in the 800 meters with a time of 2:22.98.

Sophomore Timur Krapvin placed sixth in the 400 meters with a time of 55.11, which was a personal best. In addition, he was seventh in the 200 meters at 24.66.

The Buckaroos were eighth as a team with 29.5 points.

Fernley won its home invitational with 139 points and Elko (104) was second.

Pershing County (76.50), North Valleys (67) and Dayton (64) completed the top five.

Lowry is back on the road on Saturday to take part in the Carson Invitational in Carson City. The Buckaroos close out the regular season in Truckee on Saturday, April 28, and hots their annual meet on Saturday, May 5.

The Northern 1A/2A/3A Regional Championships will take place on May 11-12 in Yerington.

The NIAA State Championships are set for May 18-19 in Carson City.
