Lady Bucks continue to roll, win three games against Dust Devils

Check off another weekend and three more wins for the Lowry High School softball team.

The Lady Bucks outscored Dayton 33-3 in three games this past weekend in Winnemucca to extend their winning streak to 13 and improve to 13-1 in the Northern 3A and 13-4 overall.

Lowry won the opener on Friday afternoon 14-2 and swept a doubleheader on Saturday 4-0 and 15-1.

“Our defense played well all weekend,” said LHS coach Ty Lucas. “They play well behind whoever is pitching for us.”

Lowry cruises

past Dayton

Lowry raced out to a 9-0 lead against Dayton on Friday and Sylvie Prokasky allowed just two hits. The only hits were solo home runs in the fourth and fifth innings. Besides that, only one other Dayton batter reached base and that was on an error.

Kelcey Cooper began the two-run Lowry rally in the first inning with a triple and was quickly knocked in by a single by Kyllie Sappington. Sappington later scored on a RBI-single by Madi McCellan.

Sophomore Sierra Maestrejuan added Lowry’s third run in the second inning after a lead-off single. Alyssa Kuskie added a single and Cooper a double in the third inning but were left stranded on base.

The Lady Bucks broke the game open with six runs in the third inning to go in front 9-0. McCellan knocked in the first two runs with a two-run home run and Bailey Sapien, Maestrejuan, Prokasky, Kuskie and Cooper followed with base hits.

Lowry tacked on five more runs in the fourth inning on the strength of the long ball by Connors and Kuskie.

The Lady Bucks were 17-of-26 at the plate and had six players with two hits or more. Kuskie, Cooper and Maestrejuan each had three hits and Connors, McCellan and Prokasky had two hits apiece.

Prokasky earned the win in the circle, throwing just 55 pitches. The senior had one strikeout.

Lady Bucks blank

Dust Devils

Lowry showed it can win games without its powerful offense, as it showed in Saturday’s opening game. The Lady Bucks collected eight hits in the victory. Lowry scored single runs in the third and fourth innings to lead 2-0 and pulled away in the fifth after a two-run home run by Bailey Sapien — her first of the year.

After struggling in her last start against Elko, Macey Katzenmeyer was dominant in the circle for Lowry. The junior allowed just three hits to go with six strikeouts and two walks. The Dust Devils loaded the bases in the seventh inning but Katzenmeyer was able to work out of the jam.

“She stepped in and was completely a different pitcher than she was last week,” Lucas said. “She was dominant from start to finish and when she throws like that she is a tough pitcher.”

Sappington and Maestrejuan each had two hits for Lowry.

Big inning leads

to Lowry sweep

Dayton pitching kept Lowry hitting at bay — for two innings. After that is was all Lady Bucks, who scored 13 runs in the third inning. Following a lead-off walk to Prokasky, Lowry followed with followed with 13 consecutive hits. Cooper, Sappington, Connors and McCellan had two hits in the third inning. Cooper’s second hit of the frame was a bases-clearing, three-RBI triple down the first-base line.

Lowry added two runs in the fourth inning after a single by Prokasky and doubles by Kuskie and Sappington.

The Lady Bucks’ offense was in high gear once again with 20 hits in 30 at bats. Eight players had two or more hits.

Sappington paced Lowry with four hits and three RBI. Connors and McCellan had two hits apiece and Kuskie, Cooper, Maestrejuan and Prokasky each had two hits.

Prokasky was dominant in the circle once again and gave up just one run on a solo home run. She allowed three hits to go with three strikeouts and no walks.

Lowry remains in first place in the Northern 3A at 13-1 and Fernley is second at 11-1. Those losses are to each other and they were set to play on Monday weather permitting.

Churchill County is third in the league at 9-1 and Dayton (10-6) is fourth.

Lowry hits the road this weekend to play South Tahoe, beginning on Friday at 3 p.m. The two squads play a doubleheader on Saturday at 11 a.m. South Tahoe knocked Lowry out of the regional tournament last year.

With two wins over the Vikings, the Lady Bucks will clinch a spot in the Northern 3A Regional Championships in May in Fernley.

“We are going to pick up from where we left off and it’s off to South Tahoe,” Lucas said.
