Lowry softball finishes sweep of Elko

What Mother Nature postponed last week, the Lowry High School softball team made up on Monday afternoon in Elko.

The Lady Bucks concluded a three-game sweep of the Indians to move to 10-1 in the Northern 3A.

Lowry won game two of the series 15-8 that restarted from the top of the fourth where Lowry led 9-8. The Lady Bucks overcame an 8-1 deficit in the first inning. Lowry won the series finale 9-3.

Lowry rallies to beat Elko

With the cold and wet weather playing a factor last Friday, Elko jumped out to an 8-1 advantage after the first inning. However, the Indians did not score another run between the two days the game was played.

The Lady Bucks answered with five runs in the second and three more in the third to lead 9-8 when the game was stopped. Lowry picked up from Friday afternoon and on Monday scored three runs out of the gate in the fourth inning to push the gap to 12-8. Madison McClellan and Savannah Dalley each had singles in the frame and Elko committed two errors. The last run of the inning came on a sacrifice fly by Kelcey Cooper that scored Dalley.

Lowry scored single runs in the final three innings and held Elko to just four hits after the first inning.

Macey Katzenmeyer started for Lowry in the circle and received a no-decision in just .1 innings of work. Sierra Maestrejuan followed with two innings of relief and earned the win. The sophomore allowed three hits and no runs. She struck out three. Sylvie Prokasky pitched the final 4.2 innings. She gave up one lone hit and struck out four.

The Lady Buckaroos pounded out 17 hits. McClellan and Kuskie each had three hits and combined five RBI and three runs scored. Kyllie Sappington, Cooper, Maestrejuan, Dalley and Prokasky each had two hits. Cooper added three RBI and three runs scored.

Lady Bucks rout Indians

In the series finale, Lowry grabbed a 1-0 on a first-inning sacrifice fly by McClellan that scored Cooper and they never trailed.

The Lady Bucks extended the margin to 3-0 in the second inning on the strength of a RBI-triple by Prokasky that scored Maestrejuan. Prokasky scored on a ground out by Kuskie.

Elko strung together four hits in the third inning to tie the game but it was all Lowry after that.

The Lady Bucks plated five runs in the fourth inning to pull away and hold off the challenge by the Indians. Dalley started the rally with a one-out single, which was followed by base hits from Kuskie, Sappington and McClellan.

Sappington closed out the scoring with a solo home run in the sixth inning. Sappington paced Lowry with three hits, two RBI and two runs scored. Kuskie and Dalley added two hits apiece.

Prokasky picked up the win in the complete-game effort. She gave up three runs on nine hits. She struck out four and walked one.

Lowry currently leads the Northern 3A at 10-1. Churchill County (9-1) and Fernley (8-1) are right on the Lady Bucks’ heels. Dayton is fourth at 10-3.

Lowry hosts Dayton this weekend, beginning with a single game on Friday at 3 p.m. The two squads play a doubleheader on Saturday at 11 a.m.
