Buckaroos drop a pair of games to Indians

Before the worst of the weather hit this past weekend, the Lowry High School baseball team was able to get in two games against Elko.

Unfortunately, for the Buckaroos the result ended in two losses in the road trip to Elko County on Friday afternoon. The Indians won game one of the doubleheader 10- and the nightcap 3-1.

The final game of the series was postponed and was made up on Tuesday afternoon. Results were not available at press time.

Indians blank Buckaroos

Elko did all of its damage in the first two innings of the opening game on Friday, scoring eight times in the first inning.

The Indians sent 12 batters to the plate and collected five hits. Five of the first Elko batters reached base and scored. Elko used a double and triple to account for its two runs in the second inning.

Lowry did not pick up its first hit until the third inning — a single by Ren Mattson to left field. The senior was left stranded at second base. Ridge Ricketts added a single in the fourth inning but could not get the offense going from there.

Tazmin Milton led off the fifth inning with a single but the final three batters struck out to end the game.

Jake Marriott went the distance on the mound for the Buckaroos and suffered the loss. He allowed 10 runs on 10 hits. He struck out three and walked three.

Elko holds off Lowry

Lowry out-hit Elko 7-5 in the night cap but could not capitalize on its offensive opportunities.

The Indians claimed a 1-0 lead in the first inning, after a two-out error by the Buckaroos was followed by a triple by Elko. Lowry scored its first run of the series in the third inning after a lead-off double by Kyle Sappington. After Anthony Hemp sacrificed him to third base, Sappington scored on a fielder’s choice with Brendan Domire at the plate.

The Buckaroos loaded the bases with two outs in the sixth inning, following consecutive singles by Josh Leveille, Marriott and Milton. However, the rally ended as Mattson grounded out to the shortstop.

After getting out of the inning, Elko added two runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a 3-1 lead. The Indians used a trip and double to lead off the inning to score their two runs.

Sappington and Hemp walked to begin the top of the seventh inning, but once again Lowry could not push a run across the plate. The Buckaroos left eight runners on base, compared to two for the Indians.

Michael Yarnell paced Lowry with two hits. Domire, Leveille, Marriott, Milton and Sappington each had a hit.

Milton went the distance for Lowry and threw just 63 pitches but suffered the loss. He allowed three runs (two earned) on four hits. He struck out four and walked none.

Lowry is back home Friday and Saturday to take on Dayton. The single game starts on Friday at 3 p.m., followed by a doubleheader on Saturday at 11 a.m.
