Lady Bucks take opener over Indians

It was a good thought at the time but Mother Nature struck again in a bad way for the Lowry High School softball team.

The Lady Bucks traveled to Elko last Friday in an attempt to play two games before the worst of the rainy weather hit northern Nevada. It turned out Lowry got a game and a half in.

The Lady Bucks won the opening game 7-3 and wee leading 9-8 in the top of the fourth inning in game two, when the game was suspended due to weather and field conditions.

The finale on Saturday was also postponed. The games were made on Monday afternoon. Results were not available at press time.

Lowry knocks off Elko

Lowry scored three runs in the top of the first inning and never trailed in the contest. The Lady Bucks built a 5-0 advantage, before the Indians got on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Alyssa Kuskie, Kyllie Sappington, Sydney Connors, Madi McClellan and Bailey Sapien all had singles in the first inning. Sappington added doubles in the third in fourth innings to give the Lady Bucks a 5-0 lead.

Elko used a pair of doubles and Lowry error to score twice in the fourth inning. Sylvie Prokasky helped herself out with a double in the top of the sixth inning and the senior later scored on a sacrifice fly by Kelcey Cooper.

The Lady Bucks tacked on an insurance run in the seventh inning on a RBI-single by Prokasky that scored Sierra Maestrejuan.

Elko had a rally going in the bottom of the seventh inning but Lowry ended the game with a double play.

Sappington was 4-for-4 in the contest with two RBI and two runs scored. Elko had five hits as a team.

Kuskie, McClellan and Prokasky had two hits apiece. Savannah Dalley, Cooper, Connors, Sapien and Maestrejuan each had one hit.

Prokasky earned the win in the circle for the Lady Bucks. She went the full seven innings and allowed three runs (two earned) on five hits. She struck out five and walked three.

Second game suspended

The two rivals couldn’t beat the weather as the game was stopped at the start of the fourth inning with Lowry leading 9-8.

Elko scored all eight of its runs in the first inning and built an 8-1 lead. Elko took advantage of three walks and two hit batters to go with four base hits to go in front.

The Lady Bucks answered with five runs in the top of the sixth inning to cut the deficit to 8-6. Maestrejuan led off the frame with a single and advanced to second after Dalley reached base on a fielder’s choice.

After the next two batters were out, Cooper restarted the rally with a single that scores Maestrejuan. With the bases loader, Connors walked allowing Dalley to score. McClellan added a RBI-single and later scored to complete the rally.

Lowry took a 9-8 lead in the third inning after back-to-back doubles by Cooper and Sappington.

The game resumed with Prokasky in the circle for Lowry. Macey Katzenmeyer started for the Lady Bucks and was replaced in the first inning by Maestrejuan. The sophomore threw two innings of relief and allowed three hits and no runs. She struck out two.

It will be a busy week for Lowry, who will be in Fernley on Wednesday for a make-up game at 3 p.m.

The Lady Bucks are back home Friday and Saturday to play Dayton. The series starts with a single game on Friday at 3 p.m. and a doubleheader Saturday at 11 a.m.
