The Battle Mountain High School baseball team opened its series with Silver Stage last week with a 14-7 win in Battle Mountain on Tuesday, March 27.
Fifteen of the 21 runs were scored in the first two innings and 10 of those were by the Longhorns. Silver Stage took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning but that was short-lived.
Battle Mountain answered back with nine runs in the bottom of the first inning and never looked back. The Nighthawks attempted to make the contest interesting, scoring four runs in the second inning. However, the Lyon County school would not get any closer.
The Longhorns scored once in the second inning and four times in the fourth to lead 14-5. Battle Mountain could end the game by the 10-run rule, as Silver Stage scored two runs in the seventh inning.
The Longhorns pounded out 12 hits, with Mason Fuller pacing the squad with four hits, four RBI and two runs scored. Fuller also had a home run. Gabe Naveran, Erik Martinez and Kade Quintana each had two hits. Reese Artz also hit a home run and finished with four RBI. Jordan Gonzalez added a hit and two RBI.
Gonzalez started and picked up the win for the Longhorns. He allowed five runs (one earned) on three hits. He struck out six and walked five. Fuller threw the final two innings and allowed two runs (none earned) on one hit. He struck out three and walked one.
Battle Mountain traveled to Silver Stage this past Saturday and results were not available at press time.
Battle Mountain hits the road this weekend to play Incline. The Friday doubleheader schedule to start at 2 p.m. will be played at Galena High School. Saturday’s single game with the Highlanders will start at 10 a.m. at Sparks High School.
