Northern 3A football rankings

Week 4

1. Spring Creek (Last Week 1). The Spartans are one of two undefeated teams left in the Northern 3A. Spring Creek has not been challenged in its first four league games, outscoring opponents 150-34. Once again, if you want to be the best, you have to beat the best.

2. Fernley (Last Week 2). The Vaqueros are your other 4-0 squad in the Northern 3A. Fernley has been in cruise control since its come-from-behind win over Churchill County earlier in the season. The Vaqueros are one of the most athletic teams in the league and had little trouble with Elko last week.

3. Churchill County (Last Week 3). The Greenwave go here by way of their big win over Truckee. Churchill County is a hard team to figure out, but is also dangerous. Last week, the Greenwave held on for a 35-34 win over South Tahoe, in a contest that saw about a million passes (kidding of course, but close).

4. Truckee (Last Week 4). The Wolverines had little trouble with Dayton a week ago in a 57-0 victory. Truckee doesn’t do anything really fancy, but get the work done it needs to do. The Wolverines should hang around in the top three of the final Northern 3A standings.

5. Sparks (Last Week 5). A week after beating Elko, Sparks had the tough task of traveling east and facing league-leading Spring Creek. That trip did not go to well for the Railroaders. They stay in the fifth slot because of their win over Elko.

6. Elko (Last Week 6). The Indians ran into the Fernley buzz saw a week ago. The Indians have dropped two games in a row and the schedule doesn’t get any easier. I feel Sparks and Elko will probably be fighting it out for the final playoff spots.

7. South Tahoe (Last Week 7). South Tahoe might be the best 1-3 team in the state. After a strong 2016 season, the Vikings had high expectations, but those have not come about this year. South Tahoe lost a shootout to Churchill County last week,

8. Wooster (Last Week 8). Wooster barely holds on to this spot. The Colts picked up their first win last week, kicking a game-winning field goal with less than a minute to play at Lowry. Wooster will probably enjoy it. The only other victory might be Dayton.

9. Lowry (Last Week 9). The Buckaroos’ first win was mere yards away last week, but fell short on a dropped pass on fourth down. Lowry’s defense has been a bright point this season, but the offense has to find a way to finish drives and avoid turnovers and penalties.

10. Dayton (Last Week 10). Dayton stays at the bottom with hopes of winning its first league game. It will likely not happen this week against Churchill County. The Dust Devils travel to Winnemucca on Oct. 6, for the Buckaroos’ Homecoming.
