Lowry boys knocked off by Elko

The Lowry High School boys soccer team suffered its third straight loss, with a 2-0 defeat at Elko on Wednesday night. It was the second straight contest the Buckaroos could not find the back of the net.

Both squads had excellent scoring chances, but the game remained scoreless through 75 minutes.

Elko finally broke through late in the contest, scoring on a goal by David Young off a give-and-go assist from Joe Telleria. Moments later, Elko notched an insurance goal by Kevin Villegas that got over the head of Lowry goalie Chris Schultz, who came in for the sliding save. Despite giving up the two goals, Schultz had a number of key saves on the night.

Lowry had a chance to take the lead near the end of the first half, but a header missed just over the top of the net.

Midway through the second half, Diego Gudino had a good look at the goal, but his shot missed just right. The Buckaroos continued to make offensive runs in the second half, with Elko goalkeeper Juan Cervantes making the saves.

Lowry (2-3-1) is currently sixth in the Northern 3A top division. The top five teams advance to the regional tournament. North Tahoe leads the league at 7-0-0.

Lowry traveled to Truckee on Friday and results were not available at press time. The Buckaroos host Sparks on Saturday at noon and travel to Spring Creek on Wednesday for a 4 p.m. start.
