The Battle Mountain High School football team took the field for their first Northern 2A league game this past Friday against the Silver Stage Nighthawks.
The Longhorns came to play with running back Jesus Piedra leading the way.
The Longhorns started off quickly scoring on their opening drive, with a 55-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Gabe Naveran to wide receiver Mason Fuller. The real strength for the Longhorns in this game came from their defense.
Silver Stage struggled to get anything going against the Battle Mountain defense, finishing with negative 32 yards of total offense in the contest.
Naveran went 4-of-7 passing for 81 yards on the night. Kade Quintana ran 30 yards for the second score in the game bringing the Longhorn lead to 14-0.
On the next Longhorn drive, Naveran led a drive into the red zone and punched in a 7-yard scramble for the score. At the end of the first quarter, the Longhorns led the game 20-0.
Battle Mountain head coach Mitch Domagala sensing Silver Stage outmatched in the game decided to give his second-string players and opportunity.
Jesus Piedra took advantage of his chance dominating the second quarter with three touchdown runs. Giving the Longhorns a 40-0 lead heading into the half.
With the lead over 35 points, a running clock was implemented and the second half the Longhorns ran down the clock as fast as they could. The Longhorns locked up their fourth straight win before heading to American Falls Idaho, next week.
American Falls will be the toughest challenge the Longhorns have faced yet this season.
“Now the season start for real,” Domagala said. “American Falls is going to be physical, they have some big kids on the line, and they just play some physical football. The last two years have been a slugfest.”
This coming week will be the first time the team will travel this season, and Domagala noted next week is American Falls Homecoming game. Domagala said, “We would love to ruin it.”
