Because of Mother Nature, it took the Lowry High School junior varsity football team a little longer to improve to 4-0 on the season.
A storm system rolled through Winnemucca on Thursday night, producing rain and a number of lightning strikes.
The lightning forced Lowry and Fernley off the field with 37 seconds left in the third quarter. After a 30-45 minute delay, the teams were able to get back on the field and finish the contest, which Lowry won 22-14.
The Buckaroos picked up the first points of the night, with less than 60 seconds gone on the clock when Dominick Kelly scooped up a Fernley fumble and he scored from 14 yards out. Lowry completed the 2-point conversion to lead 8-0.
Fernley cut the deficit to 8-7 midway through the first quarter, but both offenses had troubles holding on to the ball, with five turnovers in the first quarter.
The Buckaroos extended their advantage to 14-7 in the third quarter on a 1-yard run by Chance Huitt. After the delay, Lowry got back on the scoreboard with 4:54 left in the game on a 25-yard pass from Jordan Parker to Tyler Neu, giving the Buckaroos a 22-7 lead.
Fernley scored with under a minute to play, but could not get any closer, as Lowry ran out the final seconds.
The Buckaroos are back in action on Thursday in Spring Creek at 5 p.m.
Lowry returns to Winnemucca on Thursday, Sept. 28, to play Wooster at 5 p.m.
