Jay Frank Carpenter, husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather and friend, passed away on Sept. 10, 2017 at the age of 92.
Jay was born in Abilene, Texas on December 11, 1924 to J. Frank and Alma June Carpenter (Stonecipher).
Jay graduated from Patterson Union High School in Patterson, California in 1942.
He was drafted into the Army in 1943 achieved the rank of Corporal in the Military Police while serving in Okinawa and Korea until 1946.
Jay married the love of his life, Dorothea (Buckingham) on May 30, 1948 in Reno, Nevada.
Jay was an auto mechanic and worked in Arizona, California and Nevada.
He moved to Winnemucca, Nevada in 1958 where he worked for Sheppard Motors until her purchased the business in 1962. The business renamed Jay’s Automotive and in 1964 he became a dealer for Dodge cars and trucks. In 1974 he was named one of four dealers in the world for Chrysler. He also sold Plymouth, American Motors and Jeep. He sold the business in 1975.
He purchased and operated the Derby Flying Club in Lovelock, Nevada from 1976 to 1982.
He purchased the Sonoma Flying Service in Winnemucca in 1977. He loved flying and became a pilot and flight instructor. Jay was a Cessna airplane dealer while owning the Sonoma Flying Service. He sold the Sonoma Flying Service in 1990.
Jay and his family enjoyed many hunting and fishing trips. He was a lifetime member of National Rifle Association.
Jay was active in the community. He was a member of the Kiwanis, Democratic Party, and on the Planning Commission, Sewer Review Board, Chamber of Commerce and Winnemucca Chiefs.
Jay is preceded in death by his parents, J. Frank and Alma June Carpenter, and by his wife Dorothea of 60 years marriage, two brothers Billy Eugue and Don Carpenter and step-daughter, Muriel Echeto. He is survived by step-daughter, Laura Sweeney, grand-children and great grand-children.
He wishes for a private family service that will be held at a later time.
