Week 2
1. Spring Creek (Last week 1). Like I said last week, the Spartans are No.1 until someone beats them. I thought Spring Creek might have a tough time in South Tahoe. I was wrong. It was a good early season win in Lake Tahoe. The Spartans are the best team in the league.
2. Fernley (Last week 4). The Vaqueros may be the most athletic team in the Northern 3A. Fernley has been impressive in the first two weeks of league play. After erasing a 12-point deficit to Churchill County, Fernley shut out Lowry this past weekend in Winnemucca.
3. Elko (Last week 5). The Indians have not given up a point this year, but have played Dayton and Wooster. Time will tell with this squad. Elko played Sparks on Friday, so they should move to 3-0.
4. Churchill County (Last week 6). Perhaps my demise of Churchill County was a little early. The Greenwave lost a 12-point lead in the Northern 3A opener. I guess Churchill County was mad last week, leading Truckee 42-8 at one time. I am sorry Churchill County.
5. Truckee (Last week 2). I will stick with the Wolverines in this spot, as one of four 1-1 teams in the Northern 3A. I was shocked with their performance against Churchill County. I did not see that blow out coming. I probably had them too high, after their performance in the first two games.
6. South Tahoe (Last week 3). This is probably a low spot for the Vikings to be in. South Tahoe had the 3A state runner-up on its home field last week and were outplayed by Spring Creek. The Spartans led 30-6 at one time. The Vikings lost a ton of kids to graduation. Opponents are keying on McCallan Castles and stopping him.
7. Sparks (Last week 8). The Railroaders jumped into the win column last week against Dayton. The Dust Devils still have not won a league game since 2014. The Railroaders will have to beat a team higher in the standings, if they want to think about playoffs.
8. Wooster (Last week 7). The Colts have been outscored 55-0 in its first two Northern 3A games. Why are they No. 8? It’s win over Lowry a season ago. If the Colts can’t score in the 3A, I hate to see what it will be like in the 4A next fall.
9. Lowry (Last week 9). The Buckaroos have given up the third most points in the league (79) and have scored the second fewest (7). Lowry is still trying to find its way with a mix of youth sprinkled into the squad. The offense is moving the ball, but mistakes have been costly, ending scoring drives with no points.
10. Dayton (Last week 10). The Dust Devils have shown improvement this year, but are still winless in the Northern 3A. Dayton has given up the most points in the league at 86. We will see how much improvement Dayton has made later in the year.
