Lowry girls golfers finish third in Truckee

After two weeks of play in the Northern 3A girls golf season, there is one clear-cut favorite above the rest and two more squads competing for second place.

The Lowry High School girls traveled to Lake Tahoe at the beginning of the week, for what was to be two days of action.

However, the tournament held Monday in South Lake Tahoe was canceled due to lightning.

The Lady Bucks were able to get on the course on Tuesday and finished third with a score of 430.

Elko, the defending 3A state champion, was the class of the field once again with a 366. Spring Creek was second at 426, beating Lowry by four strokes. Churchill County (467) and Fernley (477) rounded out the top five.

Truckee (482), South Tahoe (511) and Dayton (537) completed the scores. Sparks did not have enough players for a team score.

Elko’s Annika Criss and Lowry’s Tatyana Carlson each shot 79 on the day, with Criss winning low medalist honors on the second playoff hole. Elko’s Sarah Sarbacker (87) and Caresse Basaraba (97) were third and fourth overall, respectively. Truckee’s Annika Thayer (102) placed fifth.

Freshman Angelina Martinez carded a 105 for the Lady Bucks and Hannah Havens shot a 107.

“Compared to when I was a freshman, I think I am doing pretty well,” said Havens. “I am just working on consistency right now.”

Mekenzie Vandemark (139) and Kaitlyn Hales, a freshman, finished at 152.

“The tournaments have been a lot of fun and I have met a lot of really nice people that have helped me out,” Hales said. “The different course have affected how I have played, but I have played pretty consistent.”

As of press time, the plan is to make up the South Tahoe tournament on Wednesday, Oct. 4, in Winnemucca. The Northern 3A would play back-to-back days in Winnemucca, with a tournament on Oct. 5.

Elko, Spring Creek and Lowry currently have the top three spots in the Northern 3A standings and the edge on qualifying for the state championship.

The league does not hold a postseason tournament. The top three teams in the final regular season standings advance to the state tournament in Pahrump on Oct. 18-19.

The Lady Bucks return to the course on Friday in Dayton.
