Lady Bucks cruise to shutout victory over Greenwave in league home opener

When the Lowry High School girls soccer team took on Churchill County in a preseason tournament in August, the result was a 1-1 tie.

The two teams met again on Wednesday night in Winnemucca, with a much-different result.

Lowry dominated from the start, scoring five first-half goals, en route to a 7-0 victory over the Greenwave.

“We wanted to be the aggressor from the start and we were able to do that,” said LHS coach Ed Partee. “I can't single out any one girl tonight. Everyone played well and it was a complete team effort,”

With the win, Lowry improved to 1-1-1 in the Northern 3A and 4-2-1 overall.

The Lady Bucks jumped on the scoreboard in the seventh minute, when Shelby Garrison broke free from the Churchill County defense and nailed a shot in the back of the net. Minutes later, Hailey Hinkle took a pass from Alexa Wolicki and the senior dribbled through the Churchill County defense and her shot was good from a short distance.

In the 25th minute, junior Hailey Fernandez was left alone by the Greenwave defense and she added the third goal of the night.

Fernandez assisted on the fourth goal moments later, when she passed to Erin Acosta, who was able to put the ball in the back of the net. Right before the end of the first half, Wolicki scored to give Lowry a 5-0 lead at the break.

In the 52nd minute, Fernandez notched her second goal of the contest when she got her own shot back on a rebound and popped the second-chance shot over the Churchill County goalie.

Sam Diaz finished the scoring in the 70th minute and the Lady Bucks cruised from there.

The Greenwave had some scoring opportunities on the night, but Buckaroo goalie Whitney Willey was in position to stop the Churchill County shots on goal.

“This is how this team is capable of playing,” Partee said. “We have struggled to get wins over them in the past.”

Lowry ties Incline

Lowry opened the Northern 3A season on Friday, Sept. 8, in Incline and played to a 1-1 tie. Garrison had the lone goal for the Lady Bucks.

Lakers rally to beat Lady Bucks

Due to scheduling conflicts in North Tahoe, Lowry had an early wake-up call the next day. The Lady Bucks were back on the field to play at 8 a.m. and dropped a 4-2 decision to the Lakers.

Lowry collected goals from Hinkle and Fernandez to tie the game at 2-2, but North Tahoe scored two goals in the final 15 minutes to secure the win.

“We just flat out ran out of gas at the end,” added the coach. “North Tahoe has some good players and the field turf suits their play. We have been practicing on a field that has three inches of grass and the ball is slow. We got on the field turf and it was like playing on concrete. It was so much quicker than we were used to.”

Lowry is back in Lake Tahoe today (Saturday) to face South Tahoe at noon.

The Lady Bucks are back on the road Wednesday to play Spring Creek at 5 p.m.
