The Lowry High School freshmen football team collected its first win of the year, holding off Fernley 22-17 this past Friday night at Jerry Tobin Field in Winnemucca.
The Buckaroos (1-1) got off to a quick start when Brett Ferraro took the opening kick back 70 yards for a touchdown and 6-0 lead after the missed extra point.
Lowry extended the lead to 14-0 in the second quarter, when JJ Backus scored on a 5-yard run. Caden Ricci connected with Layne Welch on the 2-point conversion.
Fernley closed the gap to 14-6 midway through the second quarter on a 2-yard touchdown pass. They added a field goal late in the first half to cut the deficit to 14-9 at halftime.
The Buckaroos extended the gap back to double figures in the third quarter on a 44-yard pass from Ricci to Colton Aspern. The 2-point conversion failed, giving Lowry a 20-9 lead.
Fernley fought back in the second half to trim the lead to 20-17, but got no closer after that. Lowry sealed the victory late in the fourth quarter with a safety.
Lowry hits the road for the first time this year on Friday, with a trip to Truckee and a 4:30 p.m. kickoff. Truckee is 2-0 on the year.
