Battle Mountain High School (BMHS) hosted the Longhorn Invitational Volleyball Tournament this past weekend.
Over 20 junior varsity and varsity teams attended the tournament, filling multiple gymnasiums.
The varsity Lady Longhorns were guaranteed five matches over the two-day competition.
Battle Mountain started the tournament on Friday with matchups against the Carlin Railroaders, Spring Creek Spartans, Smith Valley Bulldogs and Owyhee Braves.
On Saturday morning, the Lady Longhorns played one more match against White Pine High School
One of the best matches of the weekend involved Battle Mountain against Smith Valley.
The Lady Longhorns and Bulldogs battled back and forth with each other, exchanging points. The Lady Longhorns won the first of three games, but Smith Valley came back and took the second. The third game would go to the team first to score 15 points.
Smith Valley jumped out to an early lead and put Battle Mountain on the defensive with a score of 14-10.
The Lady Longhorns did not give up and came back to tie the game at 14 after four consecutive points.
Each team was desperate for the final points, which created an intense battle between the teams.
Battle Mountain was unable to finish the comeback after the last Smith Valley score.

The Lady Longhorns' volleyball teams played well over the weekend and are building toward the upcoming league games.
Battle Mountain volleyball appears to have a bright future with new varsity coach Keegan Walchli.
Athletes for each school held several jobs outside of playing the games as each team took their turn keeping score or assisting referees as line judges.
Battle Mountain opens Northern 2A play at home on Friday. The JV starts at 4 p.m. and varsity at 5 p.m. Incline comes to town on Saturday for matches at 11 a.m. and noon.
