The Battle Mountain High School boys soccer team remained in the hunt for a playoff berth, splitting a pair of matches at home this past weekend.
Battle Mountain lost 3-2 to Yerington on Friday afternoon at Tim Knight Field. The Lions picked up two goals from Omar Ledezma in a two-minute span of the first half to give Yerington a 2-0 lead. Ledezma scored in the 18th and 20th minutes.
The score was still at 2-0 in the second half, when Battle Mountain’s Brody Young put the Longhorns on the board in the 58th minute, cutting the deficit in half.
The momentum did not last long, as Yerington’s Pedro Maldonado scored three minutes later to give Yerington a 3-1 advantage. Battle Mountain made one final push toward the end of the match and scored on a penalty kick in the 72nd minute by Eddie Morfin. However, the Longhorns could not get any closer.
Battle Mountain bounced back on Saturday with an 8-0 win over Whittell. The Longhorns improved to 5-4-1 in the Northern 3A ‘B’ Division. Fernley leads the league at 9-0-2 and has clinched a playoff spot. Yerington is second at 6-4-0 and Dayton (5-4-2) is third. The top three teams advance to the regional playoffs from Nov. 2-4 in Winnemucca.
Battle Mountain travels to Fernley on Thursday for a 2 p.m. start and to Dayton on Saturday for a 10 a.m. match
