Lowry girls drop matches to South Tahoe, Elko in 3A play

With playoff hopes decided in the wrong way, the Lowry High School girls soccer team was looking to play the role of spoiler on Wednesday afternoon in Elko.

The Indians are still on the hunt for the final playoff berth in the Northern 3A top division, along with Incline and Spring Creek. Lowry did its best to hurt Elko's postseason chances, but the Indians held on for a 2-1 victory.

Elko jumped on the scoreboard in the 22nd minute with a goal by Kaitlyn Walton. Brenna Hendrix sent the ball into the middle of the field for Walton, who finished the shot.

The Indians took a 2-0 advantage toward the end of the half, when Hendrix scored from just outside the 18-yard box. That turned out to be all the offense for Elko, as Lowry turned up its defensive pressure and had more offensive chances in the final 40 minutes of play.

In the 65th minute, the Lady Bucks were able to cut the deficit in half. Rachel Garrison sent a corner kick into the box and Sam Diaz was in the right spot to kick the ball in the corner of the net.

Lowry continued to pressure the Elko defense in the final 15 minutes of play, but could not score the equalizing goal.
