Early goal lifts Lady Longhorns past Mustangs

The Battle Mountain High School girls soccer team remained on the hunt for a playoff spot at the end of the year with a 1-0 win over Pershing County on Saturday afternoon in Battle Mountain.

The lone goal of the contest came in the 12th minute, when Adrianna Slaybaugh crashed the net and tip the ball into the goal as the Pershing County goalie came out to attempt the save. The two slightly collided, with the ball going in the net.

Both teams had opportunities to score in the first half, with Battle Mountain goalie Sheradyn Slaybaugh making a number of saves throughout the 80 minutes.

Sruti Bhakta and Abigail Okrzesik had scoring chances in the second half, but could not find the back of the net. The Lady Longhorns were able to hold off a late rally by the Mustangs to keep the shutout.

Battle Mountain closes out its home schedule this week, playing Yerington on Friday at 4 p.m. Whittell visits Lander County on Saturday for a 1 p.m. start.

The Lady Longhorns are in position to capture one of the three playoff spots on their side of the Northern 3A standings. White Pine leads the league at 10-0-0, while Whittell is second at 7-1-2. Dayton is currently third at 6-4-0 and Battle Mountain is fourth at 5-3-2.

The Northern 3A Regional Championships take place Nov. 2-4 in Winnemucca.
