Lowry girls fall to Truckee, beats Sparks

The Lowry High School girls soccer team was looking to shake up the standings in the Northern 3A when league-leading Truckee visited Winnemucca last Friday.

The defending state champions came into the match undefeated in league play, but got a scare from the Lady Bucks. The match was scoreless for the first 40 minutes, but the Wolverines scored twice in the second half to escape with a 2-0 victory.

“The girls played a great game against a good team,” said LHS coach Ed Partee. “I was proud of the effort of the girls.”

Truckee had an opportunity to take the lead in the 18th minute, but missed a penalty kick. Lowry was called for a hand ball in the box, but Truckee could not convert the open look at the goal.

Lucy Ruiz had a number of saves for the Lady Bucks in the first half to keep the Wolverines off the board. Lowry made some offensive runs as well, but could not convert the chances into goals.

Truckee jumped on the board a minute into the second half on a shot from about 10 yards out and that was all the Wolverines needed.

Truckee extended the lead to 2-0 in the 67th minute, when Ava Seelenfreund broke through the Lowry defense and she was left alone for a breakaway goal.

Lowry knocks off Sparks

Lowry ended its four-game losing streak on Saturday with a 1-0 win over Sparks on Saturday afternoon in Sparks. The win propelled the Lady Bucks to 2-5-1 in the Northern 3A and 5-6-1 overall.

The Lady Bucks are currently seventh in the Northern 3A top division with seven points. Spring Creek is fifth in the league with 10 points. The top five teams advance to the regional championships in Winnemucca from Nov. 2-4.

Lowry will get a chance to tie Spring Creek in the standings when they host the Spartans on Wednesday at 4 p.m.

The Lady Bucks will stay home to play North Tahoe on Friday at 2 p.m and Incline on Saturday at 10 a.m.
