Kuskie finishes third at state championships

Mother Nature spared the runners at the NIAA State Cross Country Championships this past Saturday at Shadow Mountain Park next to Reed High School in Sparks.

What was suppose to be a rainy and cold day, turned out to be much better than anticipated.

Lowry High School’s Becca Kuskie, running in her third state meet, finished third in the 3.1-mile race with a time of 20 minutes, 19 seconds. South Tahoe sophomore Carissa Buchholz was the individual champion with a time of 19:52. Desert Pines’ Jasmin Felix was second at 20:03. Spring Creek’s Rylie Lusk (20:46) Kendra Lusk (20:47) were fourth and fifth, respectively.

Spring Creek won the state team title with 34 points and Truckee was the runner-up at 59. Elko (77) finished third and Desert Pines (116) and SECTA (131) rounded out the top five. Pahrump Valley (153) and Boulder City (177) completed the team standings.

On the boys side, Lowry junior Will Kracaw was seventh overall with a time of 17:57. Teammate and freshman Robert Rangel placed 10th in a time of 18:16. Senior Hunter Albisu was 39th with a time of 19:20.

Spring Creek won the team title with 43 points and Elko was second at 48. SECTA (103), Pahrump Valley (114) and Truckee (115) rounded out the top five. Cheyenne was sixth with 130 points and Moapa Valley was seventh at 138.
