Lady Bucks finish second in Northern 3A

The Northern 3A volleyball league has been one of the craziest in Nevada this year with none of the six playoff teams knowing their final positioning until late Monday night.

After going to the third tiebreaker in the system, Lowry High School earned the No. 2 seed for this weekend regional championships at Churchill County High School in Fallon.

South Tahoe’s win over Truckee on Monday night created a three-way tie for first place in the Northern 3A with Truckee, Lowry and Fernley all finishing 12-4.

However, through the NIAA tiebreaker system, Truckee finished first, Lowry second and Fernley third. In the mini-tie breakers, all teams were 2-2 in their own mini-standings with two other tied teams. The next three-team tie-breaker was determined by games won among the tied teams. Truckee is 10-7 in games within the mini-tie-breaker to win their tie and get the No. 1 seed. The Lowry (8-8 in games) — Fernley (6-9 in games).

Lowry and Fernley had the same number of points (76) from teams defeated in the league. The final tiebreaker was sets won against each other this year. Lowry swept Fernley in Winnemucca 3-0 and the Vaqueros beat the Lady Bucks 3-1 in Fernley. Lowry won the sets won 4-3.

On the flip side, Elko, South Tahoe and Dayton tied for fourth at 10-6. in the Northern 3A.

Lowry finished the league schedule last week with road trips to Truckee on Thursday, Oct. 26 and Sparks on Friday, Oct. 27.

Lowry, who beat Truckee in five sets in Winnemucca, won the first set 25-22. However, the Lady Bucks could not keep up the momentum, as the Wolverines won the next two sets by the same 25-18 score. Truckee won the match, claiming a 25-19 victory in the fourth set.

Lowry sweeps Sparks

Lowry had a much-easier time the following day, beating Sparks 25-13, 25-20 and 25-11 to improve to 19-9 overall.
