Masters finishes second in shot put at 1A state championships

HENDERSON — McDermitt High School sophomore capped off her year with a second-place finish in the shot put a the NIAA State Track and Field Championships this past Saturday at Foothill High School in Henderson.

Master best throw came on her sixth and final toss at 31 feet, 5.50 inches. She gradually got better with every throw. Jackpot’s Laura Cortes led the event from the first throw and won with a toss of 34-1.50.

Owyhee’s Destany Pete was third at 30-4.25 and Beatty’s Alexia Gill (29-10) and Wells’ Jenny McKinley (28-6) rounded out the top five.

Masters was the only McDermitt athlete to compete and she scored eight points for the Lady Bulldogs, who were 13th as a team.

Sierra Lutheran won the state championship with 144 points and Wells was second at 83. Tonopah, (77), Eureka (77) and Whittell (67) completed the top five.
