The Battle Mountain High School track and field team provided a strong showing last weekend at the Northern 2A Regional Championships at Carson High School in Carson City.
The Longhorn boys had two first-place finishers on the weekend in Eddie Morfin in the discus with a throw of 128 feet, 1 inch, a personal best, and Cody Ostler in the triple jump. The freshman set a personal best mark of 40-8.75. Morfin also qualified for the state meet in the shot put with a toss of 40-4. Ostler finished fourth in the long jump at 17-10.50 and advanced to state in the vent. He placed seventh in the 200 meters with a time of 25.60 seconds.
DeAndre Powell is headed to Henderson in the high jump, placing third with a mark of 5-4. The junior ran a personal best 56.01 in the 400 meters to finish sixth.
Fabian Castaneda and Ryan Manning will be joining him in the pole vault. The duo were third and fourth in the vent, clearing the bar at 8-9 and 8-0.
Austin Wilkins qualified in the 100-meter dash, placing fourth with a time of 12.45 and the sophomore was fifth in the 200 meters at 25.36. In addition, Wilkins was eighth in the long jump with a leap of 17-0.25.
Thomas Amezcua was sixth in the pole vault at 7-0, while Michael Malone (6-6) was seventh. Malone placed eighth in the 1,600 meters (5:20.510, ninth in the 800 meters (2:26.79) and ninth in the triple jump (32-0). Tristin Cordingley was eighth in the discus with a throw of 5-4,
The 4x200 relay of Cordingley, Wilkins, Castaneda and Ostler were third with a time of 1:40.56 and qualified for state.
Battle Mountain finished fourth as a team with 82 points. Pershing County won the team title with 197 points, while North Tahoe (163) and Yerington (133) were second and third, respectively.
On the girls side, Jade Smith and Hania Amezcua are headed to the state championships. Smith finished third in the triple jump with a personal best mark of 30-2.50. She placed fifth in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 59.24 and was seventh in the long jump at 12-7.50. Amezcua placed fourth in the pole vault, clearing the bar at 6-9.
Samantha Broadway provided two fifth-place finishes in the shot put (25-5.50) and the discus (24-8.75). Mary Wolters placed sixth in the 100 meters (14.94), sixth in the shot put (24.8.75) and seventh in the 400 meters (1:10.34). Maria Piedra was ninth in the 400 meters with a time of 1:25.22, which was a personal best.
The Lady Longhorns were fifth in the team standings with 33 points. North Tahoe led the team standings with 196 points and Pershing County was second at 183.
The NIAA State Track and Field Championships will be held Friday and Saturday at Foothill High School in Henderson.
