CARSON CITY — McDermitt High School’s Precious Masters is headed to the NIAA State Track and Field Championships, after a third-place finish in the shot put this past weekend at the Northern 1A Regional Championships in Carson City.
Masters’ best throw was 31 feet, 3 inches, just a foot behind Owyhee’s Destany Pete for second. Jackpot’s Laura Cortes won the vent with a toss of 38-2.75. She was the only girl to compete for McDermitt.
Sierra Lutheran won the team title with 154 points, while Wells was second at 120. Eureka (107), Whittell (71) and Jackpot (54) rounded out the top five.
On the boys side, Jagger Hinkey and Duane Horse were sixth and eighth, respectively, in the triple jump. Hinkey had a leap of 34-8 and Horse’s best mark was 31-5. Freshman Ben Draunidalo was ninth in the 800 meters with a time of 2 minutes, 18.29 seconds.
The boys 4x100 relay of Nash Pope, Horse, Jace Ramsey and Draunidalo were sixth at 50.37. The same foursome was sixth in the 4x200 relay with a time of 1:45.46.
The McDermitt boys were 12th as a team with 10 points. Sierra Lutheran cruised to the team championship with 207 points. Excel Christian placed second with 86 points and Whittell (79) was third.
The NIAA State Championships take place Friday and Saturday at Foothill High School in Henderson.
