Longhorn baseball team sees season come to end in Yerington

The Battle Mountain High School baseball team saw its season end with two losses at the Northern 2A Regional Championships last weekend at Yerington High School.

The Longhorns started the tournament on a high note with a 7-6 victory over second-seeded North Tahoe in the opening round on Friday. The Lakers grabbed the early advantage with two runs in the bottom of the third inning, only to see the Longhorns combine to score seven runs in the final three innings.

Battle Mountain plated two runs apiece in the fifth and sixth innings and tacked on three much-needed runs in the seventh to go in front 7-3. The Longhorns needed those final three runs, as the Lakers fought back with three runs in the bottom of the seventh, but fell short in the rally.

Battle Mountain moved to the winner’s bracket game on Friday afternoon, but lost 8-0 to host Yerington, who came in as the top seed in the tournament.

The Longhorns dropped the loser’s bracket on Saturday morning, where they faced West Wendover. The Wolverines knocked off North Tahoe on Friday afternoon.

The fourth-seeded Wolverines kept their season going, eliminating Battle Mountain 11-7 on Saturday morning.

Yerington went on to beat West Wendover 15-0 for the regional title.

Both teams advance to the state championships this weekend at The Meadows School in Las Vegas.
