The postseason in high school track and field has changed this season, with a new format of trials for Northern 3A schools.
Lowry High School was in Fallon last Saturday, looking to qualify athletes to this weekend’s regional championships. The Buckaroos did just that and will be well represented in the state capitol.
Lowry had the top three finishers in the girls high jump, with Shelby Garrison, Hailey Hinkle and Kenadee Jeppsen tying for first with a mark of 4 feet, 10 inches.
Hinkle advanced in two other events as well, finishing fourth in the 400 meters with a time of 60.98 seconds, a personal best, and she placed third in the 300-meter hurdles at 48.95. Jeppsen added a sixth-place finish in the long jump at 15-10.25.
Sophomore Rachel Garrison provided a strong showing in the throwing events. She finished second in the discus with a throw of 116-5 and third in the shot put at 31-10.
Senior Madison Montero set a personal best in the 100-meter dash and finished third with a time of 12.80. Montero was third in the pole vault, clearing the bar at 8-0.
Senior Audrey Snow had a pair of sixth-place finishes in the 100 Meters (13.27, personal best) and 200 meters (27.02, personal best).
Whitney Willey advanced to Carson City with a ninth-place finish in the shot put at 27-7, which was a personal best. The junior also threw a personal-best in the discus and was 10th with a throw of 94.5.
Sophomore Becca Kuskie will be in Carson City as well, finishing 11th in the 1,600 meters with a personal-best time of 5:41.41. She will also run in the 3,200 meters. Kuskie was 16th in the 800 meters in Fallon with a time of 2:44.90.
Lucero Ruiz was 12th in the 100 meters (13.95), 16th in the long jump (16-10), and 19th in the 400 meters (13.95). Lily Pasquale placed 13th in the long jump with a leap of 13-1.25 and 18th in the 300 meter hurdles at 62.65. Ashley Salgado placed 15th in the discus with a throw of 78-2 and 19th in the shot put at 23-9.25.
The relay teams did not run in Fallon and automatically qualified for the regional championships.
Erick Lopez led the Lowry boys to a first-place finish in the 100-meter dash with a personal best time of 11.11. The junior was second in the 200 meters at 22.98.
Seniors Brandon Dowd and Zachary White tied for first in the pole vault, clearing 10-0. Bryan Terry led the way in the shot put with a throw of 50-2.75 and the senior was second in the discus at 146-7.
The Buckaroos proved to be a power in the sprinting events, with junior Victor Rosas placing second in the 200 meters with a time of 23.37, a personal best, and third in the 100 meters at 11.40.
Erick Zamora is headed to Carson City in the shot put, placing eighth with a toss of 38-8.50, which was a personal best. Zamora added 13th-place finish in the discus at 103-11.
Will Kracaw will compete in the 800 meters, 1,600 meters and 3,200 meters in Carson City. The sophomore was eighth in the 1,600 meters in Fallon with a time of 4:53.48. Kracaw was 11th in the 800 meters at 2:14.91, which was a personal best. He did not run the 3,200 meters in Fallon.
Timur Krapvin finished 10th in the 400 meters with a time of 57.44, while teammate Jose Viera (59.29) was 18th. Jace Mentaberry (45.35), Nathan Kepler (45.50) and Bryan Day (46.92) were 11th, 12th and 15th in the 300-meter hurdles
In addition, Day was 11th in the pole vault, clearing the bar at 9-6 and Colton DeLaMora was 11th in the long jump with a leap of 17-6.25, which was a personal best.
Eddie Sanchez had a pair of 12th-place finishes in the discus (103-11) and shot put (37-4.75, personal best).
Jacob Frazier placed 11th in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.75, a personal best, and Raymond Orzech was 13th in the 200 meters at 24.54 and 18th in the 100 meters (12.08). Hunter Albisu (5:15.39) and Christian Olson (5:19.87) were 23rd and 27th in the 1,600 meters.
The Northern 3A Regional Championships began Friday in Carson City and conclude today (Saturday).
The top three finishers in each events qualify for the NIAA State Championships at Foothill High School in Henderson on May 19-20.
