The Battle Mountain High School track and field team is sending a handful of athletes to the Northern 2A Regional Championships after their performance last Saturday at the 2A trials in Fallon.

Junior Eddie Morfin qualified in the discus and shot put. He was second in the discus with a throw of 116 feet and seventh in the shot put at 36-11.25. The top eight qualifiers in each event advances to the regional.

Austin Wilkins (24.79 seconds) and Cody Ostler (24.88) were fourth and seventh, respectively, in the 200 meters. Ostler added a fifth-place finish in the long jump with a leap of 17 feet, 11.50 inches and Wilkins was seventh at 17-6.25.

Junior DeAndre Powell placed sixth in the 400 meters at 58.40 and was eighth in the long jump with a mark of 17-0.

Freshman Michael Malone advanced to the regional championships with an eighth-place finish in the 1,600 meters with a time of 5:35.08.

Tristin Cordingley finished 11th in the shot put (32-7.50) and ninth in the discus (88-4) and Thomas Amezcua was 13th in the 1,600 meters (5:59.51) and 18th in the shot put (24-2.50). Fabian Castaneda was 14th in the shot put with a toss of 31-2.

On the girls side, Samantha Broadway was fifth in the discus with a throw of 74-1 and eighth in the shot put at 22-2.50. Mary Wolters finished seventh in three events including the 100-meter dash (14.71), 400 meters (71.88) and the shot put (23-7.75).

Jade Smith placed seventh in the long jump with a leap of 12.7.50 and Hania Amezcua (11-6.75) and Maria Piedra (9-3) were 10th and 12th, respectively, in the long jump. Piedra also placed ninth in the 400 meters at 1:26.35. Adriene Burkhart had a pair of 14th-place finishes in the discus (37.5) and shot put (15-7).

The boys and girls relay teams did not run at the trials and automatically moved on to the regional meet.

The Northern 2A Regional Championships take place Friday and Saturday at Carson High School in Carson City. The top four finishers in each event advance to the NIAA State Championships at Foothill High School in Henderson on May 19-20.
