The Battle Mountain High School softball team ended its season on a high note, despite coming up short in a bid for the Northern 2A Regional Tournament.
The Lady Longhorns swept a doubleheader from Incline on Saturday 22-10 and 16-6 to finish the league at 9-12.
BMHS overcomes seven-run deficit to win
Battle Mountain got off to a slow start in the first game on Saturday, as Incline jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the top of the second inning. However, the Lady Longhorns slowly crawled back into the contest with five runs in the bottom of the second to trim the deficit to 7-5.
Incline countered with three runs in the top of the third inning to go in front 10-5, but that was all the offense for the Highlanders. The Lady Longhorns responded with nine runs in the fourth inning and eight more in the fifth to win by the mercy rule.
Battle Mountain pounded out 23 hits, with Marissa Rogers leading the way with four. Yulisa Vazquez, Liscet Diaz, Jonni Davis and Jenna Leavitt each had three. Alma Chavira had two hits.
Sarah Berumen and Kira Smith split time in the circle. Smith earned the win, as she gave up three runs (two earned) on four hits. She struck out two and walked two.
Lady Longhorns knock off Highlanders
Incline claimed the early lead once again with two runs in the first inning, only to see Battle Mountain score three times in the bottom of the inning to go in front 3-2. The Highlanders retook the advantage in the top of the second with two more runs.
The Lady Longhorns took the lead for good with two runs apiece in the third and fourth innings. Battle Mountain broke the contest open with eight runs in the sixth inning.
Diaz was 4-for-4 in the game with five RBI and four runs scored. Leavitt and Diaz each had three hits. McKenna Jones, Vazquez and Rogers had two hits apiece.
Kira Smith threw a complete game to pick up the victory. She allowed six runs (three earned) on eight hits. She struck out six and walked three.
Earlier ion the week, Battle Mountain took on West Wendover and dropped three games to the Wolverines. The series began on Tuesday, May 2, in Battle Mountain where West Wendover won 11-1. The Wolverines swept a doubleheader in Wendover on Friday 13-5 and 12-2.
In the contest in Battle Mountain, West Wendover led 5-0 in the top of the fourth inning, when Riane Schroeder drove home the lone run for Battle Mountain in the bottom of the fourth inning. West Wendover added three runs apiece in the sixth and seventh innings to secure the win.
Vazquez, Diaz, Rogers and Schroeder each had one hit. Smith suffered the loss in the circle.
In the first game on Friday in Wendover, Battle Mountain tied the game at 2-2 in the second inning and 3-3 in the fourth, but watched as the Wolverines scored 10 runs in the final three innings.
Rogers and Jones paced Battle Mountain with two hits apiece. The Lady Longhorns used a combination of Jones, Smith and Berumen in the circle.
The series finale was close after an inning of play, with West Wendover leading 3-2. The Wolverines used a five-run second inning to pull away and never trailed.
Julia Ramirez, Jones, Vazquez, Leavitt, Rogers and Schroeder each had one hit. Jones and Smith split time in the circle.
Battle Mountain finished fifth in the Northern 2A standings, one spot out of advancing to the regional tournament this weekend in Yerington.
Pershing County and West Wendover play in one semifinal and Yerington and White Pine play in the other.
The top two teams advance to the state tournament at The Meadows School in Las Vegas.
