Lady Bucks cruise in sweep over Wolverines

After dropping its first leagues games of the year to Fallon, the Lowry High School softball team bounced back in a big way this past weekend in its final regular season road trip of the spring.

Lowry outscored Truckee 61-7 in a three-game sweep of the Wolverines. The Lady Bucks won both ends of a doubleheader by exact scores of 19-2 on Friday.

The Lady Bucks closed out the series with a 23-3 victory on Saturday to improve to 18-3 in the Northern 3A and 20-6 overall.

Lowry uses big inning to beat Truckee

Alyssa Kuskie was one of three players with three hits as the junior finished with seven RBI, which included two triples in a 15-run fourth inning.

The Lady Bucks scored three times in the top of the first inning, on the strength of back-to-back singles by Kelcey Cooper and Kyllie Sappington. Lowry also took advantage of two Truckee errors to build the 3-0 lead.

Truckee answered back to close the gap to 3-2 in the bottom of the first inning, but the bats went silent after that. Lowry junior Sylvie Prokasky allowed just one in the final three innings.

Kuskie added a RBI-single in the third inning that scored Madi McClellan to make the score 4-2.

The Lady Bucks put the game out of reach with 15 runs in the fourth inning. Sappington started the rally with a lead off single and the onslaught was on from there. Kuskie cleared the bases with a three-RBI triple, while Sydney Connors and Alanna Miller added back-to-back triples in the frame. Kuskie closed out the inning with her second three-RBI triple of the inning.

Kaity Sample and Sappington had three hits apiece and Cooper had two. The Lady Bucks had 14 for the game and reached base seven times on walks.

Lowry blows out Truckee

The Lady Bucks built a 14-0 lead in game two of the doubleheader on Friday and never looked back. Lowry scored four times in the opening frame, following a lead off triple by Kuskie and a two-RBI double by Miller. Miller eventually scored on a ground out by McClellan.

Miller’s second double in as many at bats, began a 10-run rally in the second inning. Her double plated Cooper, Sappington and Connors. Just as Kuskie did it in the first game, Miller doubled again in the frame, scoring two more runs. Lowry also took advantage of eight walks in the inning to build the lead to 14-0.

Truckee scored twice in the bottom of the second inning, only to see Lowry score five times in the fourth inning, aided by a three-RBI double by McClellan.

Miller had a team-high three hits and seven RBI and McClellan added two hits and five RBI. Tiana Herrera and Kuskie also had two hits. Amaya Herrera, Cooper and Sample had one hit apiece.

Sophomore Macey Katzenmeyer earned the win in the complete-game effort. She allowed two runs (none earned) on two hits. She struck out two and walked nobody.

Lady Bucks finish sweep

Lowry scored in all five innings on Saturday morning, building a 17-0 lead before Truckee scored three times in the bottom of the fourth inning. The Lady Bucks added six runs in the fifth inning to end the contest by the 10-run mercy rule. Lowry finished with 17 hits.

Kuskie opened the game with a single and later scored when Cooper reached base on an error. Later in the frame, Sappington and McClellan added a RBI-double and RBI-single, respectively.

The Lady Bucks increased the advantage to 6-0 in the second and scored eight more times in the third inning. Connors had a two-RBI single and Miller drove in two runs with a double as part of the eight runs.

Connors added a home run in the fourth inning and McClellan drove home two runs with a double and Kuskie knocked two Lady Bucks in in the fifth inning with a triple.

Kuskie, Connors and McClellan each had three hits. The trio combined for 12 RBI, with McClellan collecting five and Connors four. Tiana Herrera, Sappington and Miller had two hits apiece.

Prokasky and Katzenmeyer split time in the circle, with Prokasky earning the win. They struck out three and walked one.

The battle for the second seed in the Northern 3A Regional Championships takes place this weekend in Winnemucca. Lowry faces Fernley in a doubleheader on Friday at 2 p.m. They will play a single game on Saturday at 11 a.m.

Both teams are 18-3 in league and the winner of the series will secure second place and first-round bye the following week in South Tahoe. Fallon (21-0) has clinched the top seed for the regional tournament.
