Battle Mountain track and field team closes out regular season

The Battle Mountain High School track and field team made the short jaunt to Winnemucca Saturday to close out the regular season at the Lowry Invitational.

The Longhorn boys were sixth as a team with 73 points. Elko won the meet with 353 points, Lowry was second at 288 and Spring Creek (251) was third.

Junior Eddie Morfin led the way for the Battle Mountain boys with a second-place finish in the shot put with a throw of 41-0, which was a personal best. He was fourth in the discus with a toss of 127-2, another personal best.

Freshman Cody Ostler placed third in the triple jump with a leap of 37-7, which was a personal best as well. In addition he finished fifth in the long jump at 17-8 and 14th in the 200 meters with a time of 24.81 seconds. Austin Wilkins was third in the long jump at 18-5, a personal best and the sophomore was 15th in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.57 seconds and 16th in the 200 meters (24.97).

Junior DeAndre Powell was seventh in both the high jump (5-2) and 400 meters (56.35). His time in the 400 meters was a personal best. Fabian Castaneda cleared 8-6 in the pole vault to place 10th and Ryan Manning was 13th at 7-6. Freshman Michael Malone was 14th in the 800 meters (2:32.63) and 14th in the 1,600 meters (5:27.31). Thomas Amezcua was 15th in the 1,600 meters with a time of 5:52.08 and Tristin Cordingley was 17th in the shot put at 31-11.

The 4x200 relay of David Chavez, Cordingley, Wilkins and Ostler were fifth with a time of 1:43.12.

On the girls side, Jade Smith finished seventh in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 1:00.86 and the junior was 12th in the long jump with a leap of 12-8, which was a personal best. Fellow junior Hania Amezcua was eighth in the pole vault, as she cleared 7-0 for a personal best. Amezcua placed 14th in the long jump with a mark of 11-9.50.

Samantha Broadway finished 12th in the discus with a personal best throw of 74-9 and she was 15th in the shot put at 24-4.25. The junior added a 20th-place finish in the 400 meters with a time of 1:40.87. Mary Wolters placed 12th in the shot put with a throw of 25-9, 15th in the 400 meters (1:12.89) and 16th in the 100 meters at 14.90.

Adriene Burkhart had a pair of 21st-place finishes in the shot put (14-5) and discus (33-8) and Kynndra Penson was 20th in the 100 meters with a time of 16.13.

Battle Mountain is in Fallon on Saturday for the Northern 2A Trials.
