The Lowry High School softball team continued its strong start in the Northern 3A with three more road wins this past weekend in Sparks.
The Lady Bucks outscored the Railroaders 66-5 in the three-game series to improve to 6-0 in league play and 8-3 overall. Lowry won the opener of the series on Friday 25-3 and swept a doubleheader on Saturday 21-0 and 20-2.
Lowry crushes Sparks in opener
The only hiccup for the Lady Bucks on the weekend was the first inning on Friday afternoon. Lowry jumped out to a 5-0 advantage after the top of the first inning, only to see Sparks answer with three runs in the bottom of the first inning.
Sophomore Macey Katzenmeyer settled in from there and did not allow a run in the final three inning to secure the victory in the circle. She allowed three runs (two earned) on five hits. She struck out three and walked two.
Lowry pushed the lead to 12-0 after three innings and scored 13 times in the fourth to blow the contest open.
The Lady Buckaroo offense continued to shine, pounding out 20 hits in four innings. Nine different players had a base hit for Lowry.
Kyllie Sappington nearly out hit Sparks by herself, going 4-for-4 with seven RBI and five runs scored. She also had a home run. Alanna Miller was also 4-for-4 at the plate with four RBI and two runs scored.
Sylvie Prokasky, Tiana Herrera, Kaity Sample, Alyssa Kuskie and Kelcey Cooper each had two hits. Cooper, a freshman, scored five runs and had two RBI. Sydney Connors added a two-run home run for her only hit. Madi McCellan also had a hit. Run scored and RBI.
Lowry blanks Sparks
Lowry dominated the first game on Saturday, scoring 10 runs in the first inning and never looking back. The Lady Bucks added four runs in the second inning and three more in the third to end the game on the 15-run mercy rule after three innings.
Prokasky allowed just one hit in earning the win in the circle. She struck out two and walked none. Sparks had two more batters reach base on errors.
Lowry’s hit total matched the run total at 21. Sappington, McCellan, Kuskie and Connors had three hits apiece. Sappington and McCellan had four and three RBI, respectively, while Kuskie and Connors each had two RBI. The foursome combined to score eight runs.
Bailey Sapien, Herrera, Cooper and Miller each had two hits. Miller added three RBI and two runs scored, while Cooper scored three times to go with two RBI. The Lady Bucks had a batting average of .724 in the contest, going 21-for-29 at the plate.
Lowry finishes off series sweep
Lowry ended the weekend by hitting the 20-run plateau again in the 20-2 victory in three innings. The game ended once again as part of the 15-run rule after three innings.
Katzenmeyer picked up her second win of the series, as she allowed two runs on five hits. She struck out one and walked none.
Sappington was 4-for-4 at the plate, with four RBI, three runs scored and a home run. Kuskie and Miller each added three hits. Miller had three RBI and three runs scored and Kuskie scored four times.
Sapien, McCellan and Connors had two hits apiece. Sapien scored three runs and hit her first home run of the season.
Lowry is tied for first place in the Northern 3A at 6-0 with Churchill County and Fernley. The Lady Bucks have outscored Spring Creek and Sparks 116-6 in their first six games. Meanwhile Churchill County has outscored its league opponents 95-3 and Fernley has beaten its opponents 83-6.
Lowry will step up in competition this weekend, as it makes its home debut against Elko on Friday at 3 p.m. The two teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday at 11 a.m. The Indians come into the weekend at 4-2 in the Northern 3A, after dropping two games to South Tahoe this past weekend.
