Garley William Amos Jr. was born on January 28, 1948 to parents Garley and Helen Cornforth Amos in Winnemucca Nevada. Garley was the second child of four children.
Garley grew up on the Dolly Haden Ranch. The family moved to the Upper Hillyer Ranch where they spent 13 years, then to the Clear Creek and Great Western ranches, back to the Upper Hillyer Ranch, to the Diamond S, out to Crescent Valley, to a farm at Dutch Flat and the Grayson Ranch in Paradise Valley.
Garley says his dad was his inspiration through it all. Garley belonged on a horse and the only thing Garley ever wanted to do was follow in his dad’s footsteps. In fact, Garley can’t remember too many times when there wasn’t a rope in his own hand.
After graduating from Cal Poly at San Luis Obispo in Animal Science, Garley settled into his lifelong dream and purchased the 47 (Garteiz) Ranch. Along with ranching, Garley was very involved in custom haying throughout Northern Nevada.
Garley served in the National Guard. He also served over 20 years as a member of the Agricultural District No. 3 where he was instrumental in bringing major events to Humboldt County. Garley also started the Friday Night Roping Series where you could find him flagging off of his horse Bally. He also served on the Rural Fire Board and was a sworn Deputy Brand Inspector. Garley recently completed 12 years as a Humboldt County Commissioner.
Garley was also a leading force in building the Winnemucca Event Center and the Winnemucca Ranch Hand Rodeo weekend. Seven years ago, he was even recognized by then-Governor Jim Gibbons for his dedicated service.
