Longhorns win one of two in Northern 2A opener



The Battle Mountain High School baseball team started Northern 2A action this past weekend at home with one win in three games. The Longhorns are 3-4 overall and 1-2 in the Northern 2A.

Battle Mountain lost the opening game of the series 10-3 on Friday afternoon. The Lakers held a 6-0 advantage before the Longhorns got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth inning.

North Tahoe extended the lead to 10-1 in the top of the sixth inning, when Battle Mountain scored twice in the bottom of the sixth. However, the rally was not enough to overcome the deficit.

North Tahoe claimed the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday 7-2. The contest was tied 1-1 after the first inning and Battle Mountain grabbed a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning.

North Tahoe jumped ahead 3-2 in the top of the sixth inning and pulled away in the seventh with four runs to win 7-2.

The Longhorns salvaged the final game of the weekend, winning 8-0. The Longhorns collected 13 hits in the finale and never trailed after scoring two runs in the first inning. Battle Mountain added four runs in the third inning and never was challenged.

Battle Mountain traveled to Lovelock on Tuesday to play Pershing County and results were not available at press time. The Longhorns host the Mustangs on Saturday for a doubleheader starting at 10 a.m.
