The Lowry High School baseball team began its Northern 3A season this past weekend in Spring Creek with three losses to the Spartans. The Buckaroos dropped to 0-8 overall and 0-3 in league play.
Spring Creek won the first game of the series 17-2 on Friday afternoon ans swept a doubleheader on Saturday 11-4 and 11-1.
Spring Creek claims first game of series
Lowry grabbed the early advantage in Friday’s opener, picking up two of its three hits in the first inning. With one Brendan Domire singled and two batters later, Kyle Young drove home Domire for the 1-0 lead.
Spring Creek countered with nine runs in the bottom of the second inning and sent 13 batters to the plate. The Spartans had four singles in a row and had six hits in seven at bats. Spring Creek closed out the rally with a two-run home run.
The Buckaroos added their second run in the third inning, when Ridge Ricketts walked with one out. Jake Marriott singled with two outs and Young walked the bases loaded. Senior Jayson Smith then was hit by a pitch to plate Ricketts.
Spring Creek answered with four runs in the bottom of the third inning and four more in the fourth to win by the mercy rule.
Jake Barnes started for Lowry and took the loss in two innings of work. He allowed nine runs (three earned) on nine hits. The Buckaroos committed seven errors in the contest.
Anthony Good, Darrin Nelson and Riley Sakurada also saw time on the mound.
Spartans rally to beat Buckaroos
Lowry held the lead for three innings in Saturday’s opener, starting with a two-run rally in the first inning. Ricketts led off the opening frame with a walk and scored on a ground out by Marriott. Smith restarted the rally with a walk and advanced to third base by stealing two bases. He eventually scored on an error.
The Spartans cut the Buckaroos’ lead in half in the bottom of the second inning, but Lowry quickly answered in the top of the third inning. Domire and Marriott began the frame with singles and Young had the big blow with a double.
Spring Creek added a single run in the third inning and two more to tie the game at 4-4. The Buckaroos put together a rally in the fifth inning but could not score. The Spartans took advantage and scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to lead 8-4. Spring Creek added three runs in the sixth inning to account for the final score.
Domire paced Lowry with two hits and Tazmin Milton, Nico Espinola, Marriott, Travis Hardy and Young each had one hit.
Young started for Lowry and suffered the loss in five innings of work. He gave up seven runs (four earned) on 11 hits. He struck out five and walked one. Milton and Ren Mattson saw time on the mound in relief.
Lowry drops series finale
Spring Creek jumped out to a 4-0 lead after three innings of play, before Lowry got on the scoreboard in the fourth inning after Hardy singled with one run and later scored after Espinola reached base on an error.
The Spartans scored twice more in the fifth inning and five runs in the sixth to win the game by the 10-run mercy rule.
Ricketts had two of the six hits, while Domire, Smith, Hardy and Sakurada had one hit each.
Milton started the finale and took the loss in four innings of work. He allowed five runs (three earned) on six hits. He struck out five and walked one. Barnes and Mattson closed out the game.
Lowry will look to collect its first win of the season on Friday in Sparks at 4 p.m. The two teams play a doubleheader on Saturday at 11 a.m.
