As March wound down, the 2017 Tah-Neva League Wrestling season came to a close. The championship tournament was held in Lovelock for the second straight year and for the second straight year all eyes were on the Battle Mountain Shorthorns. Coming into the weekend, the ‘Horns were looking to capture back-to-back titles as they were the defending league champions. “We had a very good week of practice. The kids worked real hard and knew what they had to do,” stated Coach Mitch Domagala.

There were 19 teams represented in the tournament. The top five were:

1. Fernley with 140

2. Battle Mt. with 122

3. Winnemucca with 113

4. Fallon with 97

5. Douglas with 80

6. Carson City with 71

“There were a lot of teams wrestling today, but it was really a three team race. We wrestled well, but unfortunately came up just short,” commented Domagala.

Stone Whitlock, Zach Duggan and Jose Guizar lead the way for Battle Mountain as they capped undefeated seasons with league titles. Also winning titles for the ‘Horns were Declan McClary, Jordan Gonzalez and Lyle Whitten. Joining them in the championship finals were runners-up Sean Scherer and Hunter Natoli. Bronze medalists were Jagger Whitlock, Chris Leloup, Hunter Andersen and Joey Huhta; while Wiatt Kelly and Isaiah Powell finished in fourth place.

Stone Whitlock was named the Oustanding Wrestler for the 7th grade division, while Jose Guizar was named the 8th grade Outstanding Wrestler.

Also wrestling were Drayden McClary, Asher Bundrock, Dalton Shake, Brice Domagala, Hafen Smith, Deacon Kyllonen, Logan Youngblood and Nolan Chopp. “We had an outstanding group of kids this season. They worked extremely hard all season and kept answering any and all challenges that the coaches threw at them,” said Domagala. “I’m real proud of the effort and character that each one of the kids on the team demonstrated. They are a great bunch and Battle Mountain should be extremely proud to be represented by them.”
