The Lowry High School track and field team opened its year this past weekend in Spring Creek with a number of good finishes from both the boys and girls teams.

The Lady Bucks finished second with 163 points, while the boys were third with 123 points. Elko claimed both team titles.

“Overall, I thought we did a pretty good job,” said LHS coach Grant Beatty. “We had some nice finishes for the first time out and the weather could not be any better. The nice thing was getting compliments from other teams on how we handled ourselves.”

Senior Kenadee Jeppsen brought home three first-place finishes on the day. The defending 3A state champion in the high jump, won the event, by clearing 5 feet, 2 inches to beat teammate Hailey Hinkle, who had a mark of 5-0.

Jeppsen beat the field by more than two feet to win the high jump with a leap of 15-9. Jeppsen also won the triple jump.

Audrey Snow, Hinkle, Shelby Garrison and Jeppsen led a 1-2-3-4 finish in the 200 meters. Snow stopped the clock at 27.82 seconds, while Hinkle (28.21), Garrison (28.39) and Jeppsen (28.59) were close behind.

Hinkle claimed an individual title for herself as well, winning the 400 meters in a time of 1:01.9 to beat the field by nearly four seconds.

Madison Montero and Snow placed second and third in the 100-meter dash with times of 13.42 and 13.54, respectively. Hailey Fernandez was 10th in the 100 meters with a time of 14.23.

Montero added a third-place finish in the pole vault, clearing the bar at 8-6 and teammate Danielle White (7-6) was third.

Rachel Garrison posted a runner-up finish in the discus with a toss of 104-0 and she was fourth in the shot put at 28-9. Teammate Whitney Willey was seventh in the discus with a throw of 78-3 and ninth in the shot put at 25-9.

Lily Pasquale added a third-place finish for the Lady Bucks in the long jump with a leap of 13-6.50.

Becca Kuskie finished fifth in the 1,600 meters with a time of 5:59.9 and sixth in the 800 meters at 2:47.9. Shelby Garrison (4-8) and Rylee Clement (4-8) were fourth and fifth, respectively, in the high jump.

Lowry’s 4x100 and 4.200 girls relays came home with first-place honors as well. The 4x100 relay stopped the watch at 1:53.2, six seconds ahead of Spring Creek.

On the boys side, Bryan Terry and Erick Zamora were first and second in the shot put with throws of 43-5.50 and 38-2, respectively.

Teammate Eddie Sanchez was fifth at 36-7.50. Zamora added second-place outing in the discus at 107-6.

Bryan Day and Zach White, each cleared 9-6 in the pole vault. Elko’s Alex Gray and Peter Neff also made their way over the bar at 9-6, but Day was the winner on fewer misses. White placed second.

Erick Lopez (11.60) and Victor Rosas (11.67) were second and third in the 100-meter dash. Elko TJ Stevens won the race at 11.56. Sophomore Raymond Orzech was 10th in the 100 meters at 12.21.

Scottie Smith and White had marks of 5-4 in the high jump to finish third and fourth, respectively.

Will Kracaw had a busy day, running in the 800, 1,600 and 3,200 meters. Kracaw was second in the 3,200 meters with a time of 11:38.50, third in the 800 meters at 2:23.4 and fourth (5:03.1) in the 1,600 meters.

Jace Mentaberry (2:25.8) and Omar Aranjo (2:26.4) were sixth and seventh in the 800 meters. Oscar Juanes finished sixth in the 400 meters with a time of 56.7.

The boys 4x200-meter relay won in a time of 1:38.3 and the 4x100 relay was second with a time of 46.02.

Lowry travels to Elko today (Saturday) for a 9 a.m. start.
